We are deeply saddened to hear that the celebrated stage and screen actor Sir Patrick Stewart has died at the age of 86. Stewart's extensive work across seven decades ranged from highly acclaimed Shakespearean roles to the hugely popular X-Men and Star Trek franchises.

All of us at Marvel Studios are deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart. Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from "X-Men" to "Logan" to "Avengers: Doomsday." He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman. Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art.

Netflix has spent the last 10 years trying to render movie theaters obsolete. i wrote about why they failed, why they gave up, and why abandoning their holy war on exhibition could save the struggling company from becoming obsolete itself. indiewire.com/features/comme…

NEW: Why did EA shut down BioWare? Twitter thinks the studio failed because it was too woke. BlueSky thinks Saudi Arabia killed the studio for being too gay. The real reason? Star Wars bloomberg.com/news/newslette…

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

These are still my favorite Apple Watch ads to this day. They beautifully conveyed the new kind of world they were trying to bring forth.
Beijing and Berlin, two "opposite" ads, released after the first batch on July 16, 2015. Instead of Apple themselves, they commissioned local marketing firms. "For exploring new places like never before, the Watch is here." "For the trip of a lifetime, the Watch is here."

Ironically, almost to the same day 14 years ago, Microsoft introduced the Surface RT with Windows and capacitive touch. Some of my favorite Apple exec quotes against touch on Macs: Tim Cook, CEO, 2012: •April earnings call, asked about tablet and PC convergence: "you can converge a toaster and a refrigerator," but the tradeoffs leave a product nobody likes. •To the WSJ, on a touch iMac: "this kind of reach for me isn't a terribly intuitive thing." He wouldn't discuss touch notebooks, calling that a roadmap question. •October call, on Microsoft's Surface: you could design "a car that flies and floats," but it wouldn't do those things well. •Craig Federighi, SVP Software Engineering, Jan. 2014 (Macworld): He said it's easy to "slap a touchscreen on a piece of hardware," then asked whether that's a good experience. "We believe, no." •Federighi, Oct. 2014 (CNET): "We don't think it's the right interface, honestly." He said constantly reaching forward from a desk to touch the screen is uncomfortable. Apple was "not all that interested in building one." •Jony Ive, Chief Design Officer, Oct. 2016 (CNET): Apple ruled out a touchscreen Mac years earlier because "it wasn't particularly useful or an appropriate application of multitouch." •Phil Schiller, SVP Worldwide Marketing, Oct. and Nov. 2016 (Touch Bar launch): ◦To CNET: engineering was better spent on the "best keyboard-trackpad experience possible." ◦To The Independent: Apple had looked at it, and "it's a bad experience." ◦To Backchannel: a touch desktop would "become absurd." "You can't optimize for both. It's the lowest common denominator thinking." •Federighi, Oct. 2016 (CNET): Apple had working prototypes years earlier. But grafting touch onto a system built around a precise pointer "really compromises the experience." •Federighi, June 2018 (Wired): He said he's "not into touchscreens." He said lifting your arm to poke at a screen is "a pretty fatiguing thing to do." Good to see Apple changed their mind.
We brought Touch to the Mac! From the all-new iPad mini to the 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac... and now MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch, creators have new tools to do their best work yet.
