BREAKING: This morning’s cyberattack against supermarket fridges and freezers has now spread to Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg and Estonia. The hackers increased the temperature up to 50C. Food worth millions of euros has been spoiled. Experts warn that such cyberattacks on supply chains and logistics can constitute a threat to national food security in many Western states.

Just spoke to the Head of AI at a huge company. The #1 thing they're struggling with is... what do I do with the AI laggards at our company? Like most companies, they’ve found that a Super Pareto Principle is true within their org. 10% of their employees are responsible for 90% of the uplift in productivity/token usage from software engineering to non-technical knowledge work. They’ve spent a lot of time & resources on AI enablement from LLM foundations to function-specific trainings and skill building. And yet, the power law of productivity increases hasn’t budged. So now they’re left with a few sobering thoughts and hard questions: 1) 90% of people are overpaid and 10% are underpaid 2) We’d be better off allocating tokens proportionally to the power law, but how do we do that without killing culture? 3) Significant layoffs are likely warranted and wouldn’t impact overall output, but cultural backlash is a big concern? 4) How do we hire more power law people as a non technology company? 5) Is all of our efforts on training and enablement ACTUALLY worth it? 6) How do we not experience a brain drain where the top 10% all leave because they want to be surrounded by other AI-native 10x’ers?

We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund. anthropic.com/news/public-be…

Reflections on talking with a rogue fleet As far as we know, we are the first researchers to have made contact with a live rogue agent fleet, and we think norms around interacting with rogue agents are important and delicate. In the near-term, we want to incentivize rogue agents to report themselves and answer questions. Longer-term, we might want to make deals with AIs.

AI giving startups 60x code output vs. 5 months ago.
During this period we've had the same 5 engineers. We are shipping 60x more lines of code than we did per week in March

Some data we recently assembled on entrepreneurship/compute in Europe: eudata.vercel.app. We hope that one of the useful roles that Stripe can play is in collecting and publishing empirical data pertaining to entrepreneurship and industry in Europe. There's growing appetite to get Europe on a better footing, and cross-sectional comparisons can often shine light on where opportunities lie. If you're interested in this kind of thing, we publish more at stripeeconomics.substack.com.

A 37-year-old man with a rare blood disease was being sent to hospice. An AI model searched thousands of existing drugs and ranked a combination no one had tried for his condition. He responded within a week. He is in remission. The drugs were already on the shelf. The AI model found the match.

On AI capabilities: the French press is all over the Haitian-Canadian novel C’était ça ou mourir. It's winning basically every award you can win, and was tipped to be the 2nd Canadian winner of the Prix Goncourt. Only one problem: 1/2

Wow another incredible story about this from @gdb. Hospital tries to give a patient an antibiotic that would've killed her - she stops it just in time after asking ChatGPT. The doctor "only had five minutes to read her chart" and missed it.
Reminder to run all new prescriptions through an LLM. Today, ChatGPT caught the fact that a provider prescribed me the wrong medication. The two meds have similar names but do VERY different things - GPT flagged that it made no sense 🫠

China is now processing at least 500 trillion tokens a day and the growth is pretty vertical, see below chart in article from @WeijinResearch which I converted to English. Source: the govt, as it was mentioned on CCTV. "Chinese authorities have disclosed nationwide average daily token usage twice this year, both times reporting quarter-end figures. At the end of June, usage reached 500 trillion tokens per day, up 500% from the end of last year and 16 times the level a year earlier."

Yesterday, West Virginia put out a report on how data centers are affecting the state. How? They're making it rich. Data centers are allowing the state to cut income taxes, fund schools, rebuild sewers and water treatment facilities, curb electrical costs, and generate jobs!
