I’ve been vetting editors/videographers for weeks now and one thing I can conclude: Creatives aren’t hungry anymore In 2021 I got an offer to move and work for the biggest YouTuber in football and one of the biggest in sports. I was in college and only had a year left before I graduated, to me that didn’t matter - I put school on pause and jumped at the opportunity. The amount of money and the “risk” everyone kept telling me it was didn’t matter to me - to me I saw it as opportunity to learn. Nowadays it seems as though there is zero worth ethic or pursuit of that same type of opportunity (just to clarity, I’ve been offering upwards of triple the amount I too the “risk” for in 2021) Common problems I see repeatedly: - Videographers not taking shooting/framing seriously - Holding the camera with one hand (shakey footage) and sometimes not even looking at the camera screen/monitor when filming (self explanatory) - Not attentive at correct framing or adaptively filming the person talking - Not wanting to move/work with a team in person (crucial for filming as a part of an IRL team imo) - Editors delivering (or not delivering at all) videos late, sloppy, and unpolished - Little things go a long way in the edit (leaving too much on the beginning or end of a clip when making simple cuts), but some of the things I’ve seen from editors charging over $1K per video are crazy to me (I won’t get too deep into it, I could talk all day about it) - Audio levels not adjusted, just letting the audio play despite one part being quiet and the next loud etc. - Color lazily thrown on a single adjustment layer and not accounting for different scene/lighting changes - Exporting/operating the sequence in the wrong frame rate - Being late or not delivering the video at all. (This one I shouldn’t even have to explain, but I’m surprised at the amount of times this happens) I could go on all day about this stuff, but the whole point is what I’m seeing in the industry right now is a lot of the same things over and over again, and not a lot of that hunger
