actually this is is super helpful. Frequently find myself at end of week with credits left over. So, I want to spend my remaining weekly credits but I can't because of the 5-hour limit. glad to see this removed
We're removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts.

FEHA fees in California: employees who won got fees in 13 of 14 motions, but a bonus on top in 1 of 12 tries. Employers got fees in 3 of 7, and only for work after the case fell apart (21 rulings, as of Oct 24, 2026).

Big fan of Rand and I’m looking forward to checking this out
I've been liking the best legal tech posts on X for years. Now they live in one place: legaltechnology.io A curated feed of what's worth reading in legal tech (hand-picked by me, not an algorithm). Take a look and tell me what I'm missing. More features to come.

💯 spot on. For decades, law firms have been talking the talk of “knowledge management” but — despite heroic efforts (often by librarians ) it never came too much. Incentives matter, and lawyers have incentives to control and not (or not always) to share knowledge
All of this talk about buying valuable Weil data (putting side the larger and impossible client-data issue) rests on the false assumption that law firms keep all their important data, like precedents, SOPs, research etc, in some super secret centralized repository and if you could just get your hands on that, you’d have that law firm’s best and most important secrets for how they deliver amazing legal service and then you too could deliver those amazing legal services. You could even train your model on it and then, boom, you can just become Weil. You can buy their name and slap it on as well. Those who have spent time with enterprise law firms know this is not true. Law firms are highly competitive. Most lawyers and partners are not incentivized to collaborate and share knowledge amongst their colleagues. At best, knowledge is shared with a very small group of practice team members and juniors. Most lawyers, especially the best, operate in highly protected fiefdoms where they husband, rather than share, their best know-how and resources. I’m sure there is value in Weil IP, but not for the reasons everyone seems to be talking about.

If Google paid $10M for Spirit’s Airline’s data when they went bankrupt, how much would a frontier/neo lab be willing to pay for Weil’s data?

"I don't remember signing it" rarely stops arbitration in California. Where that was all the employee said, the employer won 20 of 22 motions to compel (as of Oct 24, 2026). In both losses, the employer had not proved the employee signed.

Employers won the whole case in 32 of 95 California FEHA summary judgment motions (as of Oct 24, 2026). Of 221 claims that survived, 59 survived because the employer's own papers failed its first burden. Pretext saved 67.

Defaulted in California? Courts set aside the default in 393 of 607 rulings (as of Oct 24, 2026). An attorney's sworn affidavit of fault worked 43 of 50 times; a void-service showing, 108 of 135. Most losers had no real excuse (59) or filed too late (48).

Workers' comp exclusivity was the stated reason in 4 of 44 knockouts of California IIED claims pled with an employment claim, and in none of the 9 that died for good (as of Oct 21, 2026). Outrageousness and personnel decisions: 25 of 44.

IIED next to an employment claim in California survived demurrer in 25 of 73 decided claims (as of Oct 21, 2026). In 30 of the 44 losses we could check, the court said the facts were not outrageous, were only job decisions, or were bare labels. Plead what happened.

If you catch the other side's fake citations, start a separate task code that same day. In Flycatcher v. Ozmos (S.D.N.Y.), the defense lawyer who caught them got paid on October 9 for 24.1 hours spent on the misconduct and another 49.1 hours on the fee briefs, less a 10% trim. The court required contemporaneous records showing the date, the hours, and the work for each attorney. When the petition's due, dump the entries into Claude and have it sort them by task and total the hours. Then check every line against your actual bills, because the other side is going to.

Can you force a better response to your document requests? Where the court ordered a privilege log or found one inadequate, California motions to compel won at least in part in 72 of 77 RFP request sets.
