One of the biggest challenges for me with DUNE 3 is that I've spent the past several years thinking about the possible changes to the story, literally every day. So it's strange to see people only now processing and reacting to things I've already spent years coming to terms with. I'm simply at a different stage of acceptance.
Villeneuve has described adaptation as a violent process, and I think it's entirely reasonable for fans to struggle when they realize just how much violence is being done to the source material. I still miss book Chani, but I've long since accepted that we're not going to get her. That's why it's strange to feel so much relief from the latest trailer while seeing so much shock from fellow Dune fans. I want to sympathize with that reaction, but the truth is, I feel like maybe I'm beyond it at this point.
I'm not entirely sure what that says about where I am with this adaptation, but right now, I'm genuinely optimistic that the film will ultimately end the same way the book does. For the longest time, I was worried that it wouldn't, so that's a huge relief for me.
That said, I understand a lot of the frustration, and I think it's completely valid to feel that way and voice those concerns. This isn't going to be The Lord of the Rings. It's becoming increasingly clear that we're unlikely to get an adaptation that reaches that same level of greatness. But if the core themes of the book survive and the film ultimately reaches the same conclusion, functionally speaking, then I think that's about the best I can reasonably ask for at this point. Given the creative liberties taken so far, that would be the best possible outcome.
In the first few videos I made for my channel, I speculated about how Star Wars: Episode IX might course-correct in a way that would make fans happy. Obviously, that didn't happen, but I think it illustrates something about me: I really want to be optimistic about these things, even when I know that optimism is often unfounded. Sometimes, though, things do work out.
I genuinely believe there's a chance DUNE 3 could bring some of its deviations from the book back closer to the spirit and themes of the source material. I know plenty of fans still won't be happy with that, and that's completely fine.
Please don't interpret my optimism, or what you might consider cope, as an indication that I think you should feel any particular way about this film. I'm just sharing where I am with it after years of processing these changes. Your frustrations are valid, too, and you don't have to share my optimism for me to respect your perspective.

Denis Villeneuve is reportedly in early talks with Lucasfilm to direct a new, standalone ‘STAR WARS’ trilogy focused on the Old Republic.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Denis Villeneuve has publicly stated he has no interest in directing Star Wars films. This unsubstantiated claim is from a parody account; no credible reports support talks with Lucasfilm for any Old Republic trilogy.
