Basically the AI era reboot to Tomorrow Never Dies
NEW: The US military was prepared to board a Chinese vessel in the Middle East earlier this spring -- during war with Iran -- after an intel report concluded it was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program.
But just before the planned operation, officials discovered the report had been generated w/ help of AI & chatbot used by the analyst inaccurately identified what the ship was carrying, sources tell @KatieBoLillis & me.

I do not recommend this.
ANTHROPIC BUILDS BIOLOGY LAB TO PUSH AI INTO DRUG DEVELOPMENT
Anthropic has quietly established a Bay Area wet lab, moving its life-sciences ambitions beyond computer simulations and into physical biological experiments.
The company wants Claude to direct laboratory robots with limited human intervention, potentially accelerating research into rare and traditionally “undruggable” diseases.
Anthropic says it will focus on preclinical research rather than clinical trials, avoiding direct competition with pharmaceutical companies.

35 head on the dock, doesn’t look like as much as you’d expect. I’m 10 years into this and I’m still amazed that a load of cattle can get distilled down to the front half of a reefer.

US diesel futures curve is wild
Today (white), last month (blue), 6 months ago (orange)
Theory: rumors of a potential diesel export ban are likely contributing to a massive scramble to export before it goes into effect and the cause of this recent leg up in diesel prices.

It was indeed said. The "news" that Ukraine will stop bombing Russian refineries is bigger than Saudi shutting East West in today's market. Heating Oil (HO)/Diesel today

What's an acre? 🤔
In a medieval text dating back to the 1200’s, an acre is defined as "40 perches [rods] in length and four in breadth”.
Or simply, the amount of land tillable by one man behind one ox in one day. (Wikipedia)
Demanding a regulator so you can more confidently capture it has to be new in the history of business.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

NEW: Chicago Magazine just published a deep-dive into how the city is killing food carts.
It is illegal to run a Chicago-style hot dog cart in Chicago. Because it’s illegal to prep food on a licensed cart.
That’s why out of an estimated 3,000 food cart vendors in Chicago, just 12 are licensed.
“We’ve had a merchant culture in the past, like Maxwell Street. [But] the current status quo is a de facto ban,” I told Ed McClelland.
“We have a political culture that emphasizes who you know, and food cart vendors are at the bottom of the economic ladder.”
You can’t start a Chicago-style hot dog cart in Chicago.
It sounds unbelievable.
But a Chicago Policy Center review of city data found there is not a single food cart licensed to sell hot dogs on city sidewalks.
And only *three* licensed tamale cart vendors.
In a city of 2.7M people.
Meanwhile, New York City is home to 7,000 licensed mobile food vendors, with a new bill more than doubling that number over the next five years.
Chicago’s licensing regime makes hot dogs—and other street-food staples—effectively illegal to sell from a cart.
Here are a few.
🚩The city bans all food preparation on food carts.
🚩 The city defines placing a hot dog on a bun—or pouring coffee from an urn—as “preparing.”
🚩 The city bans propane tanks on carts.
In this week’s edition of The Last Ward, go deeper on how these rules came to be.
How they’re hurting low-income entrepreneurs.
And how to fix them ⬇️

I reread this every year.
I cry like a baby every year.
Todd Beamer died a father, husband, and hero.
Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can’t speak very loud. This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked.
Lisa: I understand. Can they see you?
Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives — razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake.
Lisa: Your name?Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor.
Lisa: Are you okay?
Todd: We’re going down… wait. No. We’re leveling off. We changed directions. We’re flying east again.
Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true?
Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan.
Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call.
Lisa: I promise.
Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy.
Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.)
Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol.
Todd: I understand. I’ll be back.
Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot.
Lisa: What are you going to do?
Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out.
Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.
Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.
