🚨 Thierry Henry on the refereeing against Liverpool: “At some point we have to stop treating clear, repeated errors as just ‘part of the game.’ Everyone accepts that football is hard to officiate in real time. The speed, the contact, the angles none of that is easy. But that is precisely why we have VAR, why we have protocols, and why the standard is supposed to be consistent from week to week. Liverpool are not asking for favours. They are asking for the same application of the laws that every other team is supposed to receive. When a decision is so obviously wrong that even former referees and neutral observers call it out immediately, you cannot simply shrug and move on. The on-field referee has a responsibility. The VAR team has a responsibility. When both fail on the same incident, that is not ‘human error’ any more that is a system failing the players on the pitch. The selective silence afterwards is the part that bothers me most. If the identical sequence of decisions had gone against Arsenal, Manchester City or Real Madrid, the post-match discussion would run for days. We would see endless breakdowns, referee interviews, and open debate about standards. When it happens to Liverpool, a large part of the conversation suddenly becomes ‘they should just get on with it.’ That double standard does not help anyone. It does not protect referees, it does not improve the product, and it certainly does not treat the competition as equal. Bad calls will always happen. The problem is when the response to those calls depends on which shirt is involved. Until that changes, we are not actually talking about improving refereeing we are just managing narratives.”
