🧠 How do brain immune cells influence resilience and vulnerability in aging and disease?
The brain’s immune environment plays a crucial role in shaping health, aging, and neurodegeneration. Understanding how brain macrophages respond and adapt could reveal new insights into why some individuals maintain cognitive resilience while others become vulnerable to disease.
Join Beth Stevens, USA at AD/PD™ 2027 for the plenary session:

📰Lipofuscin Ingredients Tie Development to Degeneration
"To scientists peering through a microscope, lipofuscin presents as a nuisance, interfering with immunohistochemical analysis. Could this poorly characterized, autofluorescent debris shine light on both neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders?
It accumulates steadily in neurons throughout life, and explosively in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses. These rare lysosomal storage diseases draw growing interest among scientists nowadays. 🔬
On May 3 in Acta Neuropathologica, Sreeganga Chandra of Yale University and colleagues report that in both NCLs and in normal aging, thioesterases—enzymes that remove fatty acid modifications from proteins—lose steam."

📰GOLGA8—New FTLD-FET Gene with a Dinucleotide Expansion
"Rarely do scientists discover a new pathogenic mutation for a sporadic disease. Even less often do they find one that explains half the cases. Pinning disease on a dinucleotide expansion? That’s a new one.
And yet, in one fell swoop, Rosa Rademakers, University of Antwerp, Belgium, hit the trifecta. 🔬
In Nature Genetics March 12, a large team led by Rademakers reports that a CT dinucleotide repeat expansion in the GOLGA8A gene dramatically increases a person’s odds of having aFTLD-U, a rare subtype of frontotemporal dementia."

📰Sans Hypusine, Macrophages Flail in Brain and Other Tissues
"Resident macrophages dwell in virtually every tissue in the body. They maintain order, ward off threats, and make repairs.
They tailor their specific functions to each organ—for example, microglia in the brain prune synapses and gobble up protein aggregates, while so-called “dust cells” in the lungs remove inhaled debris, allergens, or pathogens.
According to a study published January 21 in Nature, these tissue specialists all rely on the same oddball molecular mechanism for their maturation and survival."
