On this day in 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified. It took two years after Congress passed it to reach that milestone. It still stands today. It's worth celebrating. archives.gov/milestone-docum…
Happy 101st Birthday to Patricia McFarlane, the delightful daughter, Roy and Elise Olmstead, Seattle's #Prohibition bootlegging royalty. You can read the whole story here: Elise Olmstead: The Myth and Mystery of Seattle's "Queen of the Bootleggers." amazon.com/dp/B0DN16M3MH
1/ Tip a glass today in memory of America's Gentleman Bootlegger, Roy Olmstead, who died this day in 1966. Though he lost his #wiretapping case at the Supreme Court, in no small measure, his case changed the Nation's view about unconstrained governmental eavesdropping.
2/ You can read more about Roy and his extraordinary wife in my book: Elise Olmstead: The Myth and Mystery of Seattle's "Queen of the Bootleggers." lnkd.in/g-46fM3v

I'll be discussing privacy, AI, and more with @FBI leaders at @IAPP on 4/3. Hope to see you there—and comment with Q&A questions if you can’t make it.
Join the discussion on how privacy & public safety are balanced with advanced tech in an AI economy w/ Jonathan Lenzner, Chief of Staff to the FBI Director, Cynthia Kaiser, DAD of the FBI’s Cyber Division, & Michael Sussmann at IAPP Global Privacy Summit: bit.ly/3IXxR8M
Just a shout out to the incredible staff at the @JWMarriott in New Orleans where we spent Christmas - if you ever wondered what NOLA hospitality is all about, stay there!
On this date in 1890, Harvard Law Review published "The Right to Privacy" (4 Harvard L.R. 193) by Louis Brandeis and Samuel D. Warren. I wonder if written today, instead of asserting "the right to be let alone" it would meekly be recognizing "the right to whistle in the wind."
Thanks to @UW for writing about my book - the 100th anniversary of the first wiretap trial is just a few weeks away!

Tilt a glass today in honor of National Repeal Day to celebrate ratification of the 21st Amendment and the end of Prohibition!
1/ Annual Reading Roundup: I read 12 fewer books in 2024 than last year–34 in all. But in fairness, I also wrote and published a book: Elise Olmstead: The Myth and Mystery of Seattle’s “Queen of the Bootleggers,” which you can purchase here: <amazon.com/dp/B0DN16M3MH>
3/ Favorite work of fiction was "West with Giraffes," by @LyndaRutledge , a work of fiction based on the true story of the journey of two giraffes transported across America during the Depression to the San Diego Zoo. Sometimes you just need a book that makes you feel good.
4/ There were some disappointing reads for me this year too, but kudos to every author who tried! You can find my complete reading list for 2024 (and before) on @goodreads or message me for the complete list of 34 books if you are interested.
1/ On this date in 1890, the Harvard Law Review published "The Right to Privacy" by Brandeis & Warren. It was 7222 words long, but this short phrase by Brandeis summarized the point of the article to perfection: privacy is the right "to be let alone."
Thirty-eight years later, Brandeis was still making the point in dissent in Olmstead v. U.S., arguing that wiretapping violated the Fourth Amendment. I wonder what he would say about privacy today? #privacy #brandeis #surveillance #olmstead
Celebrate today by lifting a glass to the 21st Amendment, which, on Dec. 5, 1933, repealed the 18th Amendment & Prohibition! Read more about Prohibition in my new book, Elise Olmstead, The Myth and Mystery of Seattle's "Queen of the Bootleggers." amazon.com/dp/B0DN16M3MH
