🇵🇹 The Light Rebar Company, based in Guimarães, has industrialised a glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebar designed as an alternative to steel for specific applications in the construction industry. The technology is the result of more than a decade of research and development.
🏗️ Made from a glass fibre core and an epoxy matrix, the solution is four to five times lighter than steel and resistant to oxidation and chemical exposure. These properties make it particularly suited to environments where corrosion can affect the durability of concrete structures, including saline environments, swimming pools and rehabilitation projects.
According to the company, the material has an estimated durability of more than 80 years and a life cycle three to four times longer than steel. Its lower weight can also reduce transport requirements and allow manual handling without heavy machinery in certain situations. 💡
The Portuguese company now aims to take the technology beyond the national market by increasing production capacity and developing new GFRP solutions. 🌍
