On this day in 1608, Poles arrived at Jamestown, Virginia - just a year after the colony itself had been founded. Think about how remarkable that is. More than four centuries ago, at the very beginning of permanent English settlement in North America, Polish craftsmen were already there. They had been recruited for their specialized skills and helped produce glass, pitch, tar, soap ash, and other valuable materials needed to make the struggling colony economically viable. Captain John Smith himself specifically praised the work ethic of the Polish and other continental craftsmen. They were not simply passengers or bystanders in the story of early America. They were skilled workers helping build it. Historical records even describe Polish settlers coming to John Smith’s aid during a violent encounter, and later protesting when they were denied the same political rights enjoyed by English colonists. Their protest succeeded: colonial authorities recognized their rights, and the Poles returned to work and agreed to teach their crafts to others. It is extraordinary to realize that the Polish-American story reaches back to 1608. Long before the great migrations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, long before Pulaski and Kościuszko became names associated with American independence, Poles were already crossing the Atlantic and contributing their knowledge, labor, and courage to a new society. (Encyclopedia Virginia) Polish history in America did not begin yesterday. It began almost at the beginning of America itself.

I want to bring to your attention an exciting conference in Thailand in December 2026, icaai2026.mfu.ac.th/ #PlantHealth #Plants #Agriculture #FoodSecurity Food security is under threat globally due to climate change and supply chain disruption. It is imperative that we find solutions that not only provide food but are also sustainable for farmers across the world.

1/11 Trump’s operation in Iran is not just reshaping the Middle East. It is dramatically altering the geopolitical calculus for Ukraine. For Kyiv, this new conflict is a massive double-edged sword. Here is a breakdown of the very real upsides and downsides 🧵

I have just spent some time in Poland and am now enjoying a glass of Champagne in the LOT lounge at Warsaw airport, waiting for my delayed flight. Here are a few reflections from Poland: 1. All those videos about Polish Christmas markets and cities are right: Poland is extremely safe and clean. There is no need for concrete blocks like in Germany, the UK, or military patrols like in France. 2. It’s a myth that Poland doesn’t accept immigrants. Poland has a solid border wall to keep illegal immigrants out, but it welcomes anyone who wants to work, learn the language and contribute to society instead of draining welfare systems. 3. Poles are probably the most entrepreneurial people in Europe. They understand that hard work is necessary for a good life and prosperity for their children, very different from the spoiled, daddy-financed left-wing activists in “Western” Europe. In summary, be like Poland. It’s really worth it.
Be like Poland! 🇵🇱

I’m tired of “based” social media videos and big talk from the admin with zero follow through. We voted for home affordability and we were given 50 year mortgages and debt slavery. We voted for mass deportations and we can’t even get Kilmar Abrego Garcia out of our country. We have a sitting U.S. congresswoman who openly declares her loyalty to SOMALIA and the best we can do is joke about deporting her ANTIFA was linked to the assassination of Charlie Kirk and after labeling them a “domestic terrorist organization” there has been zero follow through and they’re more emboldened than ever. People are being arrested for “anti-semitic” attacks meanwhile it’s Christian children who are being targeted and killed in the middle of mass and it’s mobs of violent leftists who continue to scream “kill white people” with ZERO repercussion. American students are drowning in debt and the admin has responded by making them compete with 600,000 Chinese students. Oh and if you’re lucky enough to get a degree, you’re still going to have to compete with a Republican promoted H-1B visa hire that will work for half your pay. And don’t get me started on the DOJ’s priorities or lack thereof. This is why the right wing is divided. Because Americans voted to feel safe, prioritized and protected and every time we try to voice our concerns we are labeled as anti-MAGA, anti-Israel or anti-Trump for bringing forth substantial criticism of the direction of the party. I’ve watched the right wing implode over the last two weeks and the reason we are is because many are afraid to legitimately criticize the admin. It’s our job to openly put the pressure on when we don’t feel the country is headed in the right direction. If we refuse to do so, we’re no better than the entire left who refused to criticize Biden for his entire administration.

One very special aspect of being an academic is seeing younger colleagues graduating with a PhD or MSc. Being able to help them in their journey to achieve their life goals is such a privilege. Thank you to my November 2025 graduates at @StrathMathStat @UniStrathclyde !!!
