Across Africa, small-scale farmers face a tough balancing act of improving yields amid dry spells, while grappling with volatile market prices.
At #NationalAgroecologyFestival2026, Apolot Nalwima, facilitator at Okunguro Farmer Field School (FFS) in Serere district, shared how her group harvested 450 kg of sorghum from just 4 kg of seed. @ESAFFUg has supported these farmers with knowledge of planting in rows, and through Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB), they have been able to select sorghum varieties, such as Edei Dei, that suit their local conditions.

In his closing remarks, Serere district Deputy RDC Mr. Anthony Nseko commended @ESAFFUG for advancing agroecology, improving community health and strengthening climate resilience. He called for greater investment in school-based agroecology programmes, and collaboration with local governments to sustain these efforts.
โYou may think of local food as just local food, but it is a vast project that is handling and solving very many issues. The food will give us everything. In her welcoming remarks, @ESAFFUG National Coordinator, Ms. Nancy Mugimba, challenged participants to look beyond food security and consider the safety, nutritional value and sustainability of the food we eat.
โFood security means that there is enough food in my house, but then another question is: Is it safe? Will I have it tomorrow? What is the nutritive value of this food? How has it been produced? Is it poisonous? Is it healthy? And those are the questions that all of us are going to answer ourselves as the day goes by,โ she said.

At Okunguro, farmers are actively engaged in local value chains, particularly around Edei Dei sorghum and other local varieties. Dr. Asio Teddy Mary, Commissioner for Seed Inspection and Certification at @MAAIFUganda, emphasised the need to strengthen such farmer groups through training in proper seed storage, post-harvest management and seed bulking, as well as scaling up production to meet growing market demand.

Our food future also depends on the crops and knowledge we preserve today.
At the National Agroecology Festival, an exhibitor is showcasing two indigenous food varieties: Obucupa, a type of yam, and Ebigaga, a variety of bean.
Indigenous crops are an important part of local food heritage. Celebrating them creates opportunities to keep traditional food knowledge alive and recognise the value of crop diversity in our food systems.
Preserving what we grow and eat is part of building a more diverse and resilient food future.
