I tweet about the intersection of business, engineering and politics from a Balkan Canadian perspective. My words are my own, retweets aren't.

In almost every meeting I have with the Canadian government, I highlight how the inability to think strategically, nurture homegrown innovators, and become a good, reliable customer will result in more and more companies activating the pressure relief valve - an exit from a foreign org who values them more. We keep hearing "the world needs more Canada." Many of our allies know what our best innovators can offer. It just seems that Canada doesn't. It's time.
The Godfather of Canadian underwater drone companies has just been sold to a foreign entity, apparently without a national security review and despite interest from domestic competitors. nationalpost.com/opinion/htt…

My wife and I are married with 3 kids under 5 years old, we get ~$475/month in Child Benefits. If we kept our income the same but were 65 years old, we'd get $774/month each ($1548/month). Absolutely wild!

The Elbows Up crowd didn’t vote for Canada’s future. They voted to protect the value of the houses they already own and the comfortable status quo that benefits them right now. To hell with the young families who can’t afford a starter home, can’t build real wealth here, and are packing up for Silicon Valley or anywhere else that still rewards talent and hard work. They’re sacrificing their own children’s and grandchildren’s chances so they can feel patriotic and keep their equity. That’s not strength. That’s generational selfishness dressed up as national pride.

Great work, Dad! More importantly, awesome to see your daughter wants to engage with you. I believe Douglas Wilson said something like: the net worth of a man is determined by how much his children & grandchildren want to spend time with him.

You don’t have to love Elon Musk to recognize what this headline says about us. A country that spends more time criticizing wealth creation than encouraging it sends a clear message to builders: your success is tolerated, not celebrated. Canada should be the best place in the world to build ambitious companies. Headlines like this make us look like we’re not quite ready for that.

Nothing quite says entitled Boomer like a Canadian who lives in Europe telling the generations beneath him they’d have to pay a reverse head tax to leave the country
The Liberal party has Patrick Pichette a former Senior VP of Google on stage who lives in Europe by the way, say that if Canadians want to leave Canada to work in the US they need to pay an exit tax of half a million dollars. The guy did the very thing to get a Microsoft job decades ago and paid 30 bucks. Now he wants young Canadians to be trapped here. The Liberals are nuts.

At some point, it is worth asking why so many major Canadian news stories are broken in the foreign press, from the Trudeau blackface photos to details about the Tumbler Ridge tragedy. The CBC's entire justification for their taxpayer-funded existence is Canadian news, but they give us documentaries on drag shows while the foreign press lands scoops.

There was a line from Zohran Mamdani’s inaugural address yesterday that took my breath away. He said he intended to replace “the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.” Collectivism in its various forms is responsible for the deaths of at least one hundred million people in the last century. Socialist and Communist forms of government around the world today—Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, etc.—are disastrous. Catholic social teaching has consistently condemned socialism and has embraced the market economy, which people like Mayor Mamdani caricature as “rugged individualism.” In fact, it is the economic system that is based upon the rights, freedom, and dignity of the human person. For God’s sake, spare me the “warmth of collectivism.”

This is the way to put your money where your mouth is
Our CFO asked me to "audit" our software subscriptions last week. He sent me a spreadsheet with 200 rows. Slack, Zoom, Jira, Notion, Trello, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. He wanted me to survey the team to see which tools were essential. I told him: "Surveys are for people who care about feelings. I care about OpEx." I deleted the spreadsheet. Instead, I logged into the corporate Amex portal and reported the card as lost. Every single auto-renewal in the company failed instantly. I call this "The Scream Test." It’s simple Darwinian procurement. If a tool goes down and nobody runs to my desk screaming within 4 hours? We didn't need it. The Marketing team was at my door in 10 minutes begging for Adobe. We renewed it. The Sales team was crying about the CRM in 20 minutes. We renewed it. But here’s the interesting part. The HR department’s "Employee Wellness & Engagement Portal" ($12,000/year) has been down for six days. Not a single person has noticed. I didn't just save money. I quantified the exact value of our corporate culture. It is zero. Stop auditing. Start unplugging. If it’s important, they’ll scream. If they don't scream, it’s just noise.

Scientifically, doing hard things - and accomplishing them - is linked to happiness.... Maybe it's why so many people who avoid hard things are miserable. Take on something...your first race, a new project, and see it through. Make yourself proud.
