Sir Ian McKellen pays tribute to Sir Patrick Stewart:
“Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren't in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk-getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?".
Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London's West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.”

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

With the final vote counted, 92.31% of zionist Israelis voted to the centre-right, right, far-right & ultra-right
7.59% of zionist Israelis voted for the centre-left party, the Democrats
A left wing party calling for full Jewish-Arab equality (Beyachad Natzliach) got 0.09%

And this predictably proves to be yet another clusterfuck by the EU: they announce to much fanfare last month that Canada is to become the EU's first "associate member," only to come back weeks later and say "upon reflection, we didn't really think this one through, offer rescinded, our bad"
What happened is that the ever-horrendous Von Der Leyen literally improvised the offer into her speech - it wasn't in her prepared remarks (npr.org/2026/09/16/nx-s1-597…) - without consulting member states before, several of which were understandably furious, all the more because the term has no legal meaning.
Hard to overstate the sheer level of amateurism: we're used to the EU commission not giving a damn about what European citizens think - that's standard - but skipping the 27 governments is a whole new level.
And this is all the more absurd that Von Der Leyen, as per European treaties, has zero business doing foreign policy in the first place.
Long story short, the end result, which could be the slogan for the EU as a whole these days, is that nobody's happy and the EU ridiculed itself on the world stage.
🚨 BREAKING: EU countries have dropped the idea of offering Canada "associate member" status in the 27-member bloc, opting instead for softer language promising "ever closer association," according to a draft statement, seen by POLITICO.

.@Lagarde resignation today obviously prompting lots of speculation about what role she may place in France's presidential election. Has been chatter in Paris for some time that she may join @EPhilippe_LH on a joint ticket as his PM-candidate to attract more centre right votes. But Le Monde says it’s to give Macron a voice in choosing her successor at the ECB rather than risk that decision being screwed up in some way by Le Pen. There is also a risk that all Lagarde would do is further split the anti-RN vote heading into R1. So, too early for quick takes. Let's see
I have just informed my colleagues that I will step down as @ECB President on 7 February 2027.
It has been a source of great pride to serve this institution.
I thank all of those who have supported me on this journey over the past seven years.

Hmmm, was this because the people writing the letter are English speakers and when they looked around for a photo thought Brazil was the right spelling?

degree which deportation and asylum apparatus has been completely subsumed into weapon of class war is stunning.
In past, politics and ideology complicated process but now poor, even poor Cubans or Venezuelans, get deported to Togo or Cecot, and rich get to golf at Trump Doral

Faced with a PR hit from the disenfranchisement of Arab voters, who turned out bravely in surging numbers, how can Israel justify discounting their votes? Netanyahu now presents an evidence-free “scandal” tying the Arab parties to Israel's favorite bogeymen, Qatar and the Muslim Brotherhood. Meanwhile, there is far more evidence of Israeli attempts to suppress Arab votes:
1) On election day, Netanyahu posted that Arab voters were “Muslim Brotherhood supporters” who were “raiding the polling stations and stealing the elections.”
2) According to Reuters, Likud-branded cars drove through Jerusalem playing the Islamic call to prayer and warning that “Arabs are voting.”'
3) Haaretz reported that Likud paid teams “millions of shekels” to film Arab voters. Likud and Religious Zionism planned to send about 2,000 activists into Arab towns.
4) The Supreme Court refused to ban firearms at polling stations. The Mossawa Center documented settlers confronting voters in Tayibe, Majd al-Krum, Shefa-Amr, Haifa and I’billin.
5) Police checked IDs at Arab polling places, which is the job of election officials. In Segev Shalom, police and National Guard troops kept about 200 voters outside a school, some for up to five hours.
6) Arabic ballot slips were missing in Baqa al-Gharbiyye, Haifa, Nazareth, I’billin, Eilabun, Shefa-Amr and Nof HaGalil. Ra’am reported torn and destroyed slips.
7) Arab voters turned out anyway. By 6 p.m., Rahat had climbed from 59.5% in 2022 to 72.2%. Umm al-Fahm, Kafr Qasim and Nazareth had already passed their 2022 totals.
8) Two days later, the Central Elections Committee chair asked the Shin Bet to investigate suspected foreign funding of that turnout. His letter named no country and offered no evidence.
9) Netanyahu installed Shin Bet chief David Zini over the Attorney General’s conflict-of-interest objection. The conflict was that the Shin Bet was investigating Netanyahu’s own aides over work for Qatar.
10) On Tuesday, Zini called the election “secure, properly conducted and supervised in an inspiring manner.” By Thursday his agency was investigating whether Qatar had corrupted it.
11) The only bribery case, the Ra’am arrests, has produced no significant evidence, and police expect to close it. Police say there is no evidence of widespread fraud.
12) Likud branded it “Ra’amgate” and declared the election stolen. Ben-Gvir called for Arab party leaders to be arrested.
13) Netanyahu’s own aides were reportedly paid about $10 million by Qatar in the 2025 Qatargate affair.
Arab citizens were filmed, made to wait outside polling stations and denied ballots, and they voted anyway. Now the government that tried to keep them home is asking whether their votes were bought. The suspicion is run by Netanyahu’s handpicked security chief and rests on a bribery case the police are dropping. This is all part of a long-term play to besmirch the Arab citizens of Israel and deprive them of their voice and eventually take away their voting rights. Meanwhile, the real corruption by Netanyahu and his cronies, who genuinely took money from Qatar, goes unpunished.

Straight out of the Trump playbook.
🇮🇱 Netanyahu’s party is calling it “Ra’amgate” and says the election was STOLEN.
Israel’s election chief has ordered a probe, but says he can’t vouch for the claims yet.
Central Elections Committee chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg asked the Shin Bet to investigate suspected foreign funding and voter bribery, after the agency’s chief briefed him on what was described as exceptionally serious intelligence.
Reports say large sums were allegedly funneled to boost Arab turnout, with Qatar and Turkey named as possible sources, and that envelopes of cash with Ra’am voting slips were intercepted.
Sohlberg wants findings within a week, before the deadline for election appeals.
Likud isn’t waiting. It’s calling the affair an earthquake and an attack aimed at the Islamization of Israel, and says no Zionist party should work with Ra’am or the Joint List.
Just this morning, police said there was no evidence the election was stolen.
Investigation: opened. Verdict: already announced by Likud.

The Netanyahu plan to turn this loss into a victory has the following components:
1) Continue to completely deligitimize any cooperation with the Arab parties as a betrayal of the Jewish people, making the idea of a minority government with Raam and the Joint List too toxic to consider. It is working.
2) Focus on bringing Bennet and Liberman into the coalition by contrasting ruling with the right to ruling with the Arabs and leveraging security crises to do so. Possible turn to Eizenkot as well.
3) He is not afraid of another round of elections which will leave him in power at least until spring. At that time Arab enthusiasm will wane, fewer Israelis will come back from abroad to vote, Winter will not run again, turnout will go down and he will do better. That gives him leverage.
4) Use security crises, especially a war in Iran, and support from Trump to leverage and force Bennet, Liberman, and Eizenkot in for "patriotic" reasons.
His hapless rivals see it coming and cannot stop it. Like a fly trapped in the web of a spider, they can struggle, but they cannot get away.
