My team has released OpenAI Privacy Filter today.
Super excited as I personally invested significant time in this area since I joined OpenAI 2 years ago.

I can't help my fingers typing `. oraenv` every now and then instead io . `. ~/.virtualenvs/...`
I'm sure I'm not alone.
Darn... it's been a while. 🅾️
Use SQL to solve mysteries - a game for data geeks. Isn’t that cool?

Massive saving potential on LLM inference - transformers enhanced to learn spending less compute on some tokens during inference. Training and evals are matching the baseline model while inference ~50% cheaper. arxiv.org/abs/2404.02258
Somewhat contrarian view to the current de facto approach of most practical model evolutions.
Interesting comments threads too.
Current LLMs are trained on text data that would take 20,000 years for a human to read.
And still, they haven't learned that if A is the same as B, then B is the same as A.
Humans get a lot smarter than that with comparatively little training data.
Even corvids, parrots, dogs, and octopuses get smarter than that very, very quickly, with only 2 billion neurons and a few trillion "parameters."
Many folks have been very persistent. Grit wins! 👏
And in the other news…
No shortage of wow in tech these days.
Today, I stepped down as CEO of Binance. Admittedly, it was not easy to let go emotionally. But I know it is the right thing to do. I made mistakes, and I must take responsibility. This is best for our community, for Binance, and for myself.
Binance is no longer a baby. It is time for me to let it walk and run. I know Binance will continue to grow and excel with the deep bench it has.
I’m pleased to announce that @_RichardTeng, our now former Global Head of Regional Markets, has been named the new CEO of Binance today.
Richard is a highly qualified leader and, with over three decades of financial services and regulatory experience, he will navigate the company through its next period of growth. He will ensure Binance delivers on our next phase of security, transparency, compliance, and growth.
Prior to joining Binance, Richard was CEO of the Financial Services Regulatory Authority at Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM); Chief Regulatory Officer of the Singapore Exchange (SGX); and Director of Corporate Finance in the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
With Richard and the entire team, I’m confident that the best days for @Binance and the crypto industry lay ahead.
As a shareholder and former CEO with historical knowledge of our company, I will remain available to the team to consult as needed, consistent with the framework set out in our U.S. agency resolutions.
What’s next for me?
I will take a break first. I have not had a single day of real (phone off) break for the last 6 and half years.
After that, my current thinking is I will probably do some passive investing, being a minority token/shareholder in startups in areas of blockchain/Web3/DeFi, AI and biotech. I am happy that I will finally have more time to spend looking at DeFi.
I can’t see myself being a CEO driving a startup again. I am content being an one-shot (lucky) entrepreneur. Should there be listeners, I may be open to being a coach/mentor to a small number of upcoming entrepreneurs, privately. If for nothing else, I can at least tell them what not to do.
On that note, I am proud to point out that in our resolutions with the U.S. agencies they:
- do not allege that Binance misappropriated any user funds, and
- do not allege that Binance engaged in any market manipulation.
Funds are SAFU!
With that, I look forward to seeing the new leadership take the reins. Please join me in congratulating Richard on his well-deserved promotion.
Onwards!

It’s like nothing stops @gdb from shipping?
The team’s loyalty to product and customers also match their loyalty to the leader. Respect.
✅ Assuming @ilyasut is still at the board then one practical move is to convince just two more board members. If one digs in, the majority of the current board (3 out of 4) can just kick one out and then resign or do the needed to transition governance to the new board.

I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company.
While @satyanadella won, there is still space for other winners. @elonmusk already at OpenAI HQ?
Elon stopped being fan of OpenAI (and I guess Sam specifically) years ago after transition to capped-profit structure. Everyone has their bias.

I am very worried.
Ilya has a good moral compass and does not seek power.
He would not take such drastic action unless he felt it was absolutely necessary.

i loved my time at openai. it was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. most of all i loved working with such talented people.
will have more to say about what’s next later.

After learning today’s news, this is the message I sent to the OpenAI team:

Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today.
Let us first say thank you to all the incredible people who we have worked with at OpenAI, our customers, our investors, and all of those who have been reaching out.
We too are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. Here is what we know:
- Last night, Sam got a text from Ilya asking to talk at noon Friday. Sam joined a Google Meet and the whole board, except Greg, was there. Ilya told Sam he was being fired and that the news was going out very soon.
- At 12:19pm, Greg got a text from Ilya asking for a quick call. At 12:23pm, Ilya sent a Google Meet link. Greg was told that he was being removed from the board (but was vital to the company and would retain his role) and that Sam had been fired. Around the same time, OpenAI published a blog post.
- As far as we know, the management team was made aware of this shortly after, other than Mira who found out the night prior.
The outpouring of support has been really nice; thank you, but please don’t spend any time being concerned. We will be fine. Greater things coming soon.
I wouldn’t misquote the paper as providing evidence that transformers don’t generalize (which may be true). Nevertheless, good research support to somewhat anecdotal feel on the state of current AI as being unable to generalize.
I’m working at Meta today. It’s tough time for many here and at other big and small tech shops.
Yet, I personally don’t feel mistreated by my employer. In fact, I don’t really recall being mistreated by any of my past employers.
I wonder if it’s just a personal mental choice?
