It’s been an unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season so far. @FSU_EOAS atmospheric scientist Allison Wing explains how El Niño is helping suppress hurricane development and why Floridians should still stay prepared.

Congrats to @FSU_EOAS' own @alli_wing, who has won the Atmospheric Sciences Ascent Award from @theAGU! 👏
The award is presented annually, recognizing research and leadership excellence in mid-career atmospheric and climate scientists.
"I'm incredibly honored to receive the award, because it's earned based on the perception of my research by my colleagues in the field," Wing said.
Wing is an associate professor of meteorology and environmental science at @FloridaState, and her work centers on tropical cyclones and tropical convection. ⛈️🌀
"The overarching theme of my research is the clustering of tropical clouds and thunderstorms — its different forms, driving mechanisms, influence on broader climate, and role in tropical cyclone development. For example, recent research from my lab found that interactions between clouds and thermal radiation accelerate tropical cyclone genesis and intensification."

AMS is responding to the potential dismantling of NCAR through statements, advocacy, and leveraging the voices of our community and partners. The deadline to respond to NSF’s request for information about NCAR is 13 March.

ALT Graphic for the testimonial from Ryan Torn, University at Albany, SUNY professor "NCAR provides vital services to my research program through observation facilities, access to computing that is designed for atmospheric applications, and expertise for collaboration. I have been a part of multiple field programs that … have generated new research on hurricane genesis and severe thunderstorm predictability, which would not be possible without NCAR facilities.”
I’m honored to lead the AMS TMTC committee filled with this amazing group of scientists!
