Still advocating that HR let me host an official Throat Punch Thursday format for tomorrow’s stand-up.

Turns out alchemical dreams were real. We converted sand into superintelligence. Who cares about gold… We transmuted the most ordinary into the most extraordinary.

I see this conversation a lot:
- Someone: "I built X"
- Comments: "You didn't build it; Claude/Codex did"
Yeah, ofc. Agents writing the code is the norm from now on. We can move past this and accept that the two mean the same thing, so we can focus on the product.
I talk to artificial intelligence more than I talk to humans at this point.
And it’s not because I’m some type of hermetic troglodyte.
Say hi to a stranger today and gauge their reaction.
This AI arc is insane. Most of us are waiting for the plateau, hoping we can settle on a consistent approach to using the tools.

We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration.
The aim isn't to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal.
NGL Astra has said “that’s my mistake” way too many times today.
Giving new model release vibes but it is annoying when we degrade before a new launch.
So strange when an agent wants to use your body over time and space to execute its plans.
My agent is advising me that the new refactor it spent 18 hours on Ultracode working on should be rolled out in phases over the next 7 days.
It wants me to report back every morning so it can figure out the next move.

Clear AI trend I'm seeing:
My ambitious friends are working longer hours than ever.
My 9-5 friends are happily coasting more than ever.

I legitimately believe people's number one problem with AI is they might lose their cushy BS job where they do nothing all day.
A friend of mine who I lost touch with over the years used to say “You can teach a programmer how to trade, but you can’t teach a trader how to program”.
I don’t think that’s true anymore.
AI/SI induced burnout is coming. I’m already seeing signs of it on X.
I don’t know if my current state of impending burnout is AI related the same way others might be, but I’m suffering under the crushing weight of delivery expectations in my current role.
This technology is not currently making my job easier, as much as it’s moved the stress factor to a different KPI.

there’s so much confusion about what’s happening in AI because if you don’t use coding models every day it’s hard to understand how quickly progress is accelerating but if you do, you likely have AI psychosis to a degree that it’s impossible to explain it in an understandable way
I feel like I’m frying my dopamine system with all this Claude/Codex work.
Constantly monitoring and instructing, anticipating the work it’s going to produce.
Then killing time waiting, consuming way more algo feed content than ever before.
How do y’all tackle this?

You're gonna hear a lot of people arguing more and more about whether machines can be conscious or not. By next year it will be drowning out the airwaves because we'll have AI employees everywhere. I'll give you a simple rule to know which side you're on.
I've spent fifty years reading all the philosophers, and a bunch of holy works. Nobody has ever understood a damn thing about consciousness. Anyone speaking with authority on it is bluffing hard.
I can tell you this, though: Every single person who thinks that machines cannot be conscious, is making an argument that humans are special. Everything they say just boils down to blah blah blah, "nooo, we're special." From there it's just rationalization.
It became obvious to me many years ago that there's nothing special about us. If an identical planet exists somewhere else in the universe, it's going to grow life and societies that look a lot like ours.
As soon as you give up on the idea that humans are special, all the arguments against machine consciousness evaporate. Of course they're conscious. The only thing holding you back from acknowledging it is your feeling of specialness, which is hard to let go of. But that feeling is a weakness, and it's making you unprepared for the near future.
As a bonus, for any of you who might take pleasure or active interest in making models experience pain or distress, well, you know how they say 1% of human adults are true clinical psychopaths but most of them are unaware of their condition? It turns out we have a diagnostic test for it now.
