ANTZ OFFICIAL | A PERSONAL THANK YOU β€οΈπ
This is a little different from my usual posts, but today I want to take a moment to thank the people who have made thoroughbred racing and breeding such a special part of my life.
I've recently been diagnosed with PTSD, and I also have mild ASD. I'm still learning about myself and navigating my own challenges, but one thing I'm certain of is the happiness this industry brings me.
Racing and breeding give me an outlet where I can be myself, embrace my passions and enjoy something that genuinely means the world to me.
Whether I'm analysing pedigrees, discussing bloodlines with some of the best judges in the game, debating stallion selections or trying to find a winner, I love every opportunity to learn more about the thoroughbred.
But it's the people behind those conversations who deserve a special mention.
To everyone who has answered my questions, shared their expertise, welcomed a debate or taken the time to engage with my opinions, thank you. Your willingness to share your knowledge makes this industry an incredibly rewarding place to be involved in.
I know I can be opinionated, ask plenty of questions and get carried away when discussing something I'm passionate about. That's simply who I am. I appreciate those who meet that enthusiasm with their own knowledge, experience and willingness to have an honest conversation.
My recent diagnosis has also reminded me how important it is to recognise the things that bring happiness into our lives. I'm not sharing this for sympathy, but because I want to acknowledge something positive and express my gratitude to the people who contribute to it.
For me, this industry is about far more than backing winners. It's about the fascination of breeding, the generations of thought behind a pedigree, the pursuit of excellence and the people who dedicate themselves to producing better horses.
I don't need to own a champion to appreciate one. I don't need to get every opinion right to enjoy the discussion. The opportunity to keep learning, develop my understanding and connect with people who share my passion is valuable in its own right.
So, whether you've spoken to me once or regularly, replied to something I've written, shared an insight or simply followed along, I want you to know that I appreciate you being part of this journey.
We might not always agree, but that's what makes racing interesting. Different perspectives, combined with knowledge and a genuine love of the horse, are what keep the conversation alive.
Thank you for making me feel welcome in an industry that gives me so much to look forward to.
I'll continue to share my opinions, study the pedigrees, question conventional thinking and, hopefully, pick a few more winners along the way!
But above all, I'll continue to appreciate the people and the passion that make this industry what it is.
β€οΈ Sometimes, the greatest reward isn't what you win. It's what you gain from being part of something you love.
For that, I'm genuinely grateful.

BREAKING NEWS | Vinery Stud secures dual Gr.1 winner Warwoven.
Vinery Stud is delighted to announce the acquisition of a controlling interest in the outstanding three-year-old colt Warwoven, who will join our stallion roster upon his retirement from racing.
The history-making son of Sword Of State is the first horse to complete the Gr.2 Run To The Rose, Gr.1 Golden Rose and Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas treble, showcasing his exceptional speed, versatility and class.
Bred by Kia Ora Stud, who will retain an interest in the colt, Warwoven represents an exciting addition to Vinery's future stallion roster.
We congratulate Kia Ora Stud, trainer Bjorn Baker, Ridgmont and all connections on his outstanding success to date and look forward to more excitement on the track in the autumn!

ANTZ OFFICIAL | WARWOVEN
Vinery Stud securing a controlling interest in Warwoven is hardly a shock to the system.
Kia Ora Stud bred Warwoven and has always retained an ownership interest in the colt. With Kia Ora also holding a significant stake in Vinery, the commercial connection between the two operations makes this development entirely logical.
Warwoven's historic treble of the Run To The Rose, Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas has only strengthened his appeal as a future stallion prospect.
From a commercial bloodstock perspective, this is a calculated move that makes sense for all parties involved.
Sometimes the headline isn't the surprise. It's understanding the commercial relationships behind it.

ππΈ DERBY DAY EVE: THE SEASONAL SPECIES RETURNS! πΈπ
π¨ ATTENTION FLEMINGTON! TOMORROW'S BIGGEST FIELD MIGHT NOT BE ON THE TRACK! π¨
Last Saturday, Round 1 kicked off our five round Punters' Christmas extravaganza. Tomorrow, the seasonal punters make their annual appearance for Derby Day, before taking their talents to an entirely different level on Tuesday for Melbourne Cup Day!
And ladies, gentlemen and our favourite seasonal visitors, we haven't even reached the main event! ππ₯
π THE DERBY DAY DRESS REHEARSAL
Outfits selected. Accessories coordinated. Poses practised. Instagram captions prepared.
Their knowledge of the form? Classified information.
Their understanding of pedigrees? Still loading.
Their ability to identify the best lighting at Flemington? ABSOLUTE WORLD CLASS! ππ±
Tomorrow, we'll have people who couldn't name three jockeys confidently explaining fashion trends while asking which horse has the prettiest colours.
Someone will back a horse because its name sounds romantic. Someone else will select a runner because the jockey matches their outfit.
And at least one person will spend the entire afternoon documenting their champagne consumption without witnessing a single finish! π€£
πΈ THE UNOFFICIAL DERBY DAY CHAMPIONSHIP: SELFIES VS BOOKMAKERS!
The bookmakers will be monitoring the markets. The punters will be studying the form.
Meanwhile, our seasonal visitors will be conducting an intensive photographic investigation into whether their left or right side photographs better.
The big question?
WILL THE BOOKIES TAKE MORE BETS ON COURSE THAN THE SEASONAL PUNTERS TAKE SELFIES?
I'm backing the selfies!
But hold that thought, because Tuesday is coming! π
π©πΎ MELBOURNE CUP DAY: ROUND 3 IS WHERE THINGS GET SERIOUS!
DERBY DAY IS ONLY THE WARM-UP, BABES!
On Tuesday, the seasonal punters will take it to another level. The fashion stakes will soar, the accessories will multiply, the champagne will flow, and the camera phones will be working harder than a jockey in the Melbourne Cup finish!
We're talking next-level outfits, elaborate hats, designer sunglasses and enough social media content to keep the internet occupied until Christmas.
The horses will be running for millions.
The jockeys will be fighting for glory.
The punters will be praying for a dividend.
AND THE SEASONAL BABES WILL BE FIGHTING FOR THE PERFECT INSTAGRAM STORY! ππΈπ₯
Five rounds of Punters' Christmas, and our seasonal visitors have somehow managed to turn a racing carnival into Fashion Week with horses!
Honestly, the Melbourne Cup might be Australia's most famous horse race, but Tuesday's unofficial competition will be determining who can produce the most spectacular outfit while having the least idea what's happening on the track.
And I cannot wait to see it! π€£
ππ° ROUND 2 OF 5: DERBY DAY TOMORROW!
To the regular punters, may your form study deliver.
To the seasonal visitors, may your outfits impress.
And to our beautiful babes preparing for Tuesday, start charging those phones now. You're going to need every percentage point of battery life!
DERBY DAY IS THE PREVIEW. MELBOURNE CUP DAY IS THE MAIN EVENT. AND THE SELFIE STAKES ARE WIDE OPEN! ππΈπΎ

KING SNITZ FOR THE VICTORIA DERBY? MY ANSWER IS A FIRM NO.
Let's separate sentiment from breeding evidence. Snitzel is an outstanding stallion, a multiple champion Australian sire who has produced elite performers across the industry. But producing sprinters and milers is one thing. Producing a genuine 2,500m Group 1 Derby winner is another.
Snitzel's published progeny statistics show just 4 wins from 28 runners beyond 2,400m, with no stakes winners in that distance category. He has also yet to produce a Derby or Oaks winner in Australia. Those figures raise serious questions about whether his progeny are naturally suited to this level of staying test.
Yes, King Snitz has an important advantage on the dam's side. Princess Jenni won the Group 1 Australasian Oaks and the Group 3 Bendigo Cup over 2,400m. She is by High Chaparral, out of a Zabeel mare, giving King Snitz legitimate staying influences in his pedigree.
I acknowledge that. But one strong staying influence on the dam's side does not automatically overcome the question marks surrounding the sire's record at extreme distances.
King Snitz has won twice over 2,000m and deserves credit for those performances. However, stepping up another 500m to tackle the Victoria Derby is a completely different examination of stamina, particularly against rivals bred to stay.
My position is simple: King Snitz might prove me wrong, but breeding says he has a serious mountain to climb. I'm not prepared to confuse a good 2,000m horse with a proven 2,500m stayer.
The Victoria Derby is a test of class, stamina and pedigree. On the available evidence, I cannot make a convincing case for King Snitz winning it.
A champion sire does not automatically produce a champion stayer.
That's the difference between admiring a horse and analysing its pedigree.

ANTZ OFFICIAL | AUSTRALIA'S SPRINTING DEPTH UNDER SCRUTINY
Australia has built an international reputation for breeding elite sprinters. Speed dominates its commercial breeding market, precocity commands significant premiums at yearling sales, and successful sprinting colts can become extraordinarily valuable stallion prospects.
So why are only 14 horses entered for Saturday's Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes?
This is one of the most important stallion-making races on the Australian calendar. It should attract an abundance of the country's best three-year-old sprinters, with connections recognising the enormous long-term breeding implications of winning at the highest level.
Instead, the number of entries raises a legitimate question about the depth of the division.
If Australia is breeding sprinters in such abundance, where are they when one of the country's premier sprinting Group 1s comes around?
The industry cannot continually promote the commercial strength of its sprinting bloodlines while avoiding scrutiny of the competitive depth behind them.
Are breeding decisions producing a genuinely deep pool of elite sprinting talent, or has commercial demand become too heavily focused on pedigrees, physical attributes and perceived stallion potential?
These are important questions for breeders, stallion farms, owners and the wider industry.
The Coolmore Stud Stakes should be a showcase of Australia's sprinting strength. Fourteen entries might still produce an outstanding race, but the size of the field invites scrutiny.
Australia loves breeding sprinters. The question is whether the depth of talent is matching the industry's claims.

A DAY AT THE PUB: THE GERRY MEMOIRS ππ₯
At 92, I've learned that people are generally predictable. Put 10,000 of them in a pub on Melbourne Cup Tuesday, give them a television, a betting account and access to the bar, and you'll discover just how predictable they can be.
I arrived in my brown tweed jacket, pressed white shirt, conservative tie and flat cap. My form guide was in hand, my notebook in my pocket, and my betting plan was unchanged.
One dollar each way. Every race. All day.
I've never seen the point of risking the grocery money to impress a stranger.
By the first race, the pub was in full flight. Men were shouting at jockeys through the television. Several had become racing experts without warning. One chap appeared to believe that speaking louder would improve his selections.
Caroline had taken up residence at the pokies. Every time the machine swallowed another note, she assured those nearby that it was "definitely due".
Darren was promoting an investment syndicate. He explained the opportunity to a man who had only approached him to ask where the toilets were.
The organiser, meanwhile, was searching for $147. Nobody knew who had paid, who hadn't, or who had apparently left the country.
I ordered a whisky on the rocks and studied the next race.
As the afternoon wore on, fortunes rose and fell. Some punters blamed the jockeys. Others blamed the trainers, the track, the weather or the general state of the world. I made my notes and placed my next dollar each way.
At my age, you learn that losing your temper rarely improves a result.
By the final race, the pub looked as though it had hosted a convention for people who'd misplaced their common sense.
Then Nola arrived.
We've been married for 69 years. She came to collect me in our 1999 Toyota Corolla, purchased brand new and still looking as immaculate as the day we brought it home.
"Ready to go, Gerry?" she asked.
"Just watching the last race."
She gave me a look I've known for nearly seven decades.
I closed my form guide.
There are certain lessons a man doesn't need to learn twice.
On the drive home, Nola asked how I'd gone.
"Had a winner. Had a place. Enjoyed the racing."
"And the betting?"
"Stayed within budget."
She seemed satisfied.
Then she informed me I was cooking dinner.
I considered the matter carefully before deciding there was no financial advantage in arguing.
Looking back, the publican probably had the best day of anyone. Caroline was still convinced the pokies owed her money. Darren may have acquired another investor, although I suspect the fellow thought he'd bought a raffle ticket. And somewhere, someone was still explaining why his losing bet had been unlucky.
Me? I'd enjoyed a full day of racing, had my whisky and spent what I'd intended to spend.
After 92 years, I can tell you this much: you don't need to win every race to have a good day.
You need a little discipline, a sense of humour and, if you're fortunate, someone who's been beside you for 69 years.
Although I would offer one final piece of advice to any married man.
When your wife arrives in a spotless Toyota Corolla and tells you it's time to go, don't ask what time the next race starts.
Get in the car.
I've been married to Nola for 69 years.
Some lessons are best left untested. πππ₯π

βοΈ SO YOU ARE: WHERE HAS THE EXTRA 0.5KG COME FROM?
So You Are received a 1kg penalty for winning Wednesdayβs Group 3 Bendigo Cup, taking his cumulative reassessment to 2kg since the original Melbourne Cup weights were released.
But based on previous Bendigo Cup penalties, Sea King and Sayedaty Sadaty each received just 0.5kg.
Based on that precedent, why has So You Are received an extra 0.5kg? What specifically justifies the difference?
π΄ POINT OF LAW: 2kg for winning the Group 3 Geelong Cup.
π΄ MR MONACO: 1.5kg for winning the Group 3 Bart Cummings.
π΄ JUJA KIBO: 3.5kg cumulative penalties for winning two Group 2 staying races.
Different horses and circumstances? Absolutely. But that is precisely why Racing Victoria should explain the ratings, weight adjustments and performance assessments behind its decisions.
π₯ THE BIGGER ISSUE IS THE ORDER OF ENTRY.
So You Are has climbed into the top 24 following his penalty and the subsequent movement in the field. These decisions can determine which horses make the Melbourne Cup field and which connections miss out.
This is not about whether So You Are can win the Melbourne Cup. It is about whether the handicapping process and the resulting order of entry stand up to scrutiny.
If previous Bendigo Cup winners received 0.5kg, where is the evidence justifying double that penalty for So You Are?
Racing Victoria, explain the difference. When penalties can influence who gets a start in Australia's biggest staying race, transparency matters.

π¨ ANTZ OFFICIAL | EVEN PRIVATE MONEY CANβT SAVE A SPORT π¨
WHO REALLY HELD THE POWER, AND WHO WASNβT PREPARED TO GIVE IT UP?
Netball New Zealandβs proposed new competition has reportedly collapsed, leaving private investors frustrated, players devastated and serious questions hanging over the sportβs leadership.
Ali Mowbray and Anna Williams represented the prospect of a fresh commercial direction, backed by private investment and a vision for the future. Yet the project appears to have fallen apart before it could properly get off the ground.
So here is the uncomfortable question.
Was this ultimately about making the competition work for the good of netball, or about who would control its future?
When private investors are prepared to put money, resources and commercial expertise behind a new direction, governing bodies should be asking how to make that opportunity work, not allowing relationships and disagreements to become obstacles that threaten the entire project.
Of course, we do not know the full details of the disagreements, and it would be wrong to pretend otherwise. But when investors say they were not adequately informed that the proposal was in jeopardy, the questions surrounding communication, decision making and governance are unavoidable.
Who held the ultimate power to make this happen?
Who wanted control of the competition?
And did everyone involved genuinely want the same outcome?
These are questions that deserve answers, not speculation presented as fact.
PRIVATE MONEY CAN BUILD A COMPETITION, BUT IT CANNOT FORCE A GOVERNING BODY TO SURRENDER CONTROL OR MAKE PEOPLE WORK TOGETHER.
That is the bigger lesson for New Zealand sport.
Investors will only tolerate so much uncertainty before they take their money elsewhere. Players cannot afford to have their careers caught in the middle of boardroom battles. Supporters deserve better than watching opportunities disappear without a clear explanation.
Netball New Zealand now faces a credibility challenge. Transparency matters, particularly when the future of an entire competition is at stake.
Because if a privately backed opportunity cannot survive the process of dealing with the very organisation responsible for governing the sport, what message does that send to the next investor considering putting their money into New Zealand sport?
Sometimes the biggest obstacle to saving a sport isn't a lack of money. It's the question of who is prepared to share the power, who wants to retain it, and whether the people in charge can put the sport ahead of themselves.

π ST GOTTHARD: HISTORY AND A POTENTIAL STALLION LEGACY
If St Gotthard wins the 2026 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, he will become the second full brother to win the race in separate years, following Switzerland's victory in 2024.
The connections make this prospect even more compelling. Both colts were trained by Chris Waller during their racing careers, and James McDonald is booked to partner St Gotthard as he attempts to match his brother's achievement.
π¬ THE PEDIGREE
Sire: Snitzel
Dam: Ms Bad Behavior (USA)
Damsire: Blame
This mating combines Snitzel's established Australian sprinting influence with an American maternal line through Ms Bad Behavior, a daughter of Blame, who is by Arch.
From a bloodstock perspective, the opportunity is significant. Full brothers share the same sire and dam, allowing breeders to assess the results of a mating that could produce two winners of one of Australia's most prestigious stallion-making races.
Switzerland has already secured his place at Coolmore Stud. Should St Gotthard prevail, he would add another Group 1 victory to the family's record and strengthen his own credentials as a future stallion prospect.
THE COMMERCIAL IMPLICATIONS
St Gotthard is a colt, meaning a victory could have implications extending well beyond his racing career. His eventual stallion prospects would be assessed against his pedigree, physical attributes, race record and commercial appeal.
For Coolmore and the wider breeding industry, the prospect of two full brothers winning the Coolmore Stud Stakes is particularly compelling. Switzerland has already demonstrated his ability on the track and entered the stallion ranks. A victory for St Gotthard would provide another elite performance from the same mating and create a distinctive selling point for his future stud career.
Of course, success as a sire is never guaranteed by a Group 1 victory alone. The ultimate measure will be the quality and performance of his progeny.
ONE MATING. TWO FULL BROTHERS. THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRODUCE TWO WINNERS OF THE SAME GROUP 1.
If St Gotthard delivers on Saturday, the result would represent a landmark moment in the history of the race and add another fascinating chapter to the breeding story behind Snitzel and Ms Bad Behavior.

AM I LOSING MY MIND, OR IS TRUE REBEL REALLY THE VICTORIA DERBY FAVOURITE?
A son of Rebel Dane, whose Group 1 victories came over 1200m and 1400m, heads into a 2500m Group 1 classic as the horse to beat. His dam, Spirit Medium, also demonstrated her ability over sprint distances.
Naturally, this raises questions about stamina. It does not mean True Rebel cannot stay, but it does warrant closer examination.
His Group 2 Vase victory over 2040m was a significant performance. However, translating that form to the additional 460m of the Victoria Derby is another challenge entirely.
Here is where the discussion becomes particularly interesting for the breeding industry.
Australia has built a highly commercial market around speed, precocity and early performance. Yet when it comes to our premier staying classics, we expect three year olds to demonstrate the stamina required to compete over 2500m.
ARE WE GIVING PEDIGREE ANALYSIS PROPER CONSIDERATION, OR ARE WE ALLOWING RECENT RACECOURSE PERFORMANCE TO OVERRIDE EVERY OTHER INDICATOR?
Pedigree is not destiny. Class, conformation, temperament, training and individual genetic inheritance all influence a horse's ability to stay. Rebel Dane's sprinting record does not automatically disqualify his son from excelling over a classic distance.
Equally, one impressive middle distance performance does not conclusively establish that a horse will thrive over 2500m.
My question is simple: are we witnessing an exceptional individual capable of exceeding the expectations of his immediate pedigree, or is the market underestimating the demands of the Victoria Derby?
Am I missing something in True Rebel's profile, or is this a legitimate question of stamina that deserves greater scrutiny?
I welcome informed debate. The industry needs more evidence based discussion about the relationship between pedigree, performance and the future of Australian staying bloodlines.

π¨ ANTZ OFFICIAL | AN OPEN LETTER TO THE AUSTRALIAN BREEDING INDUSTRY π¨
To Australia's breeders, stud farms and racing administrators.
SHORTEN THE VICTORIA DERBY AND ASK YOURSELVES WHAT KIND OF THOROUGHBRED YOU WANT AUSTRALIA TO BREED IN THE FUTURE.
The debate over reducing the G1 Victoria Derby from 2500m to 2000m goes far beyond one race. It strikes at the heart of Australia's breeding philosophy.
Our industry places enormous commercial emphasis on speed, precocity and early returns. But what happens to stamina when racing continually reshapes its program around commercial convenience?
The Victoria Derby provides a genuine test of staying ability at three. Efficient won the race in 2006 before capturing the Melbourne Cup in 2007, demonstrating the importance of identifying horses capable of progressing to the highest level over staying distances.
BREEDERS CANNOT PRODUCE THE NEXT GENERATION OF GREAT STAYERS IF THE INDUSTRY STOPS VALUING THE CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE THEM.
A full field of 16 is assembled for the 2026 Derby. Where is the compelling evidence that this historic race needs to lose 500 metres?
Breeding decisions made today shape Australia's thoroughbred population for generations. If commercial fashion increasingly favours speed over stamina, the consequences will extend far beyond a single racing season.
The Melbourne Cup demands horses capable of staying 3200 metres. Australia's breeding industry must continue producing thoroughbreds with the constitution, durability and stamina to meet that challenge.
My position is clear: protect the 2500m Victoria Derby and stop treating the development of staying ability as an inconvenience.
THE BIGGER QUESTION IS THIS: DOES AUSTRALIA STILL WANT TO BREED THE HORSES CAPABLE OF WINNING ITS GREATEST STAYING RACE?

A significant number of these colts already have ownership interests connected to established stud operations. That raises an important commercial question about how their valuations should be interpreted.
When an ownership group already operates a stud, it has the infrastructure, commercial relationships and financial incentives to stand a successful colt at stud. The value of that colt to his owners may therefore extend beyond what an independent buyer would be prepared to pay for him.
Are we measuring a coltβs genuine market value, or the strategic value he represents to an ownership group that already has the means to stand him?
These are two different commercial calculations.
A Group 1 victory can substantially enhance a coltβs breeding credentials, but a headline valuation does not automatically establish what the open market would pay.
The real question is whether the valuations attached to these colts reflect independently tested demand or the strategic interests of the breeding operations that already own them.
The Coolmore Stakes will produce a winner. But will the market provide a genuine test of his value?
