Sabeer Bhatia is now lecturing India on crony capitalism and state capture from California. In 2006, under the UPA government in Haryana, his Nano City project got state approval for ~11,000 acres in Panchkula. Cap table: Bhatia group 52%, Parsvnath 38%, HSIIDC 10%. He talked up a ₹50,000 crore valuation, an airport and a golf course. By 2010, almost nothing had been built. HSIIDC cancelled it after the main promoter failed to deliver plans or real progress. He didn’t mind the state-backed land deal when he held the majority stake. The lectures started after the project flopped. Archives don’t forget.

👇🏼 is what several of us have been saying for 2-3 years, on the basis of our calculations, using Household Consumption Expenditure survey, HCES 2023-24. The confirmation by the World Bank is important for global comparative purpose! If we account for the monetary value of free food provided by GOI, PDS, Absolute Poverty Rate is virtually zero.
What's incredible is that India has managed to reduce poverty by a huge amount while also reducing inequality!

"Where are you from in Marwar?" / "Marwar me kathe ra ho?" An elderly shopkeeper asked me this yesterday I paused for a second, then said Nagaur We're third generation in Chennai, so nobody asks this anymore. But it made me think about why the question exists at all Long before probably your village was your credential A young man would come to Sowcarpet from Rajasthan to start some business. If he showed up at it every day for a month or two, the big established financiers from the comm would notice, and extend a couple of lakhs to him without him even asking. Seed funding, in a way My Dada went to Calcutta for his first job. The salary was barely enough for rent and food, and money still had to go back home. So he carried a letter from a respected family in the village: this boy is the son of so-and-so, hardworking and worthy of support A large firm in Calcutta had a system - if you came from their village with that letter, you could sleep in their office. After hours the tables were pushed aside and the boys laid out their beds. Before the office opened, everything was packed and the desks were back in place The man giving the office knew exactly whom to hold accountable. The man writing the letter thought twice before vouching. Reputation was the collateral, and everyone strived to protect it Two generations later, we are still grateful to that family. That one act of shelter enabled my Dada to work, save and build a life He eventually settled in Chennai's steel market, worked hard and built a name. Then he pulled up a bunch of people. He first gave them brokerage work, and as they learnt the trade, backed them to start their own shops. He never worried they'd become competitors - abundance thinking Showing up every day, backing your people, paying it forward. It compounds.. – at Egmore Nungambakkam, India

Amidst all the chatter about economic growth, here’s something positive! India’s poverty story is changing. 496 million Indians moved above the $4.20/day poverty line between 2011-23. Poverty rate: 57.7% → 16.1% Extreme poverty: 27.1% → 2.6% The World Bank sees it falling further to 12.1% by 2028. The real dividend of growth should be better opportunities for the next generation.

"Data is the oxygen of Digital Life, and oxygen must never be in short supply." On 1 September 2016, Mukesh Ambani used these exact words as he announced free Jio 4G. 🇮🇳 That day, India: - had under 1 in 3 Indians online - paid ₹226 for 1 GB of data - used under 1 GB a month - had ~40 crore internet users - had just 80 lakh 4G users - ranked 155th in mobile broadband 🇮🇳 A decade later, India: - has 2 in 3 Indians online - has over 1 billion internet subscribers - has 95.8 crore active internet users - has 54.8 crore users in villages, 57% of all users - has 55 crore 5G users - pays ~₹7 for 1 GB of data - uses 28 GB a month per user - is YouTube’s #1 market, with 51.8 crore users - is Instagram’s #1 market, with 48 crore users - has 61% of users watching short videos - spent 1.23 lakh crore hours on apps in 2025 - is ChatGPT’s #2 market, with 16 crore+ users - has 44% of users using AI features - creates 20% of the world’s data - gets 13% of its GDP from digital - and is growing its digital economy 2x faster than GDP One truly incredible decade-long journey. 🇮🇳
