I was told that the next administration was going to be staffed with qualified technocrats after years of giving top jobs to unqualified loyalists, but it appears that the next administration is setting up an apparatus to “train” unqualified loyalists to work in the government??
Pretty good scoop from @jackiepeiser: Major philanthropic foundation is shopping a $2k fund that would fund @Janeese4DC transition, train appointees, and bankroll the nonprofits whose leaders it imagines might get top jobs. dc.citycast.fm/dc-politics/w…

I'm not going to post the video of Trump's attack on @jacobbogage here. But I will say: Bogage is a former colleague, terrific journalist and wonderful human. He asked a direct, reasonable question that Trump simply couldn't handle.

Ah, the uniquely DC experience of being at the park with your kid and hearing a very, very low flying jetliner — and it’s just the Qatari-gifted Air Force One doing a flyby of the White House Halloween event.

Going 11-2 over a random two-week stretch in the regular season is very good. Doing it over the entire playoffs, against the best teams in baseball, all playing for their lives, is extraordinary. This Brew Crew is all-timer, even among World Series champs.

The *one* specific and interesting economic argument Chairman Warsh today was that the Fed’s interest rate “thermostat” can cool all rooms in the house, even if some are starting from a warmer position than others
The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady today, and we think patience is the right approach. Inflation remains high, but the question isn't simply whether rates should go higher. It's whether higher rates would actually address the inflation that remains.
The challenge is that parts of the economy, and of inflation itself, are moving at very different speeds. Growth remains remarkably resilient in aggregate, supported by a powerful investment cycle, but beneath the surface, parts of the economy that are more sensitive to borrowing costs are feeling considerably more restraint. We see a similar divergence in inflation. Many of the cyclical components that respond to higher interest rates appear relatively well controlled. Meanwhile, persistent pressures across energy, insurance, healthcare and education are unlikely to be meaningfully affected by another 25-basis-point rate increase.
In some ways, the Fed is operating a house with one thermostat, but very different temperatures in every room. Turning it down further may make the rooms that are already cool even colder, without doing much to cool those that remain hot.
That doesn't mean the Fed should become complacent. Inflation is still above its 2% objective and the Fed should retain the option to tighten further if the underlying inflation trend deteriorates. But hawkish rhetoric and patient policy can comfortably coexist, particularly when the bond market has already done some tightening of its own through higher Treasury yields.
For investors, we think this environment argues for humility rather than making a heroic directional call on rates. Real yields remain attractive, and there's considerable income available across high-quality fixed income markets. We continue to favor a moderate duration posture, taking advantage of today's income opportunities while remaining patient as this unusually divergent economy evolves.
The Fed doesn't need to ignore the heat. It just needs to be thoughtful about where it's coming from.

The symbolism of Bessent not showing up to chair a G20 Ministerial and forgoing a major gathering in Asia when China’s regional economic presence is ever larger is not a good look for the US.
Some impressions from the Bank-Fund meetings in Bangkok:
1. The words are all negative but the numbers are all positive. Is all about unprecedented waves of shocks and risks while the IMF upgraded the forecast to something even stronger.
2. No one cares about tariffs anymore, they expect them to continue forever and have adjusted and moved on.
3. Everyone cares a lot about high interest rates. They expect them to continue forever but they haven't moved on.
4. Oil prices fall somewhere between these two. Everyone cares some, aren't sure if they'll continue and have partially moved on.
5. Everyone is having exactly the same conversations about AI as they are having here: will the demand boost continue, is it a bubble, will it kill jobs, when will it show up in productivity. I sensed much more optimism than pessimism and finance ministers and central bankers are not particuarly interested in p(doom).
6. No one seemed to mind that Scott Bessent didn't bother to attend.

I've been following the Clarity debate since I started at Bloomberg earlier this year and it became very clear very quickly, talking with Senate offices on both sides, that the one issue that would stop the bill from passing was Trump's crypto haul. New from me, @olgakharif & @antoniabmassa
The crypto industry watched with a grim foreboding as its landmark bill detonated on the Senate floor. Blame first fell on Democrats, none of whom voted to advance it. But some of the industry’s own supporters pointed elsewhere: at Trump bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Weirdly, the #KennedyCenter board publicizes falling plaster in its main hall, I guess to show fixes are needed. But it kind of shows they're spectacularly mismanaging the place, no?
“Another example of the urgent need to close for renovation and revitalization, as our Chairman President Trump has championed. Fortunately, no one was injured when the main hall’s ceiling collapsed.
This structural failure stems from decades of neglect and deferred maintenance by the previous leadership, and there’s no justification for further delays in restoring America’s cultural center.”
