The Indian government is displaying increasingly authoritarian practices in its response to peaceful dissent.  The right to protest is constitutionally protected.   The state’s role is to facilitate peaceful protest, not make it an arbitrary privilege granted by the police. Authoritarian practices take hold when dissent is treated as a threat rather than a right. Dissent is not a crime.

PAKISTAN: Responding to the declaration of a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as the imposition of governor rule and the deployment of armed forces in the province, Amnesty International said: “Reports of arbitrary detentions of key leaders – including the provincial chief minister – and internet disruptions across the province raise concerns about the proportionality of these emergency measures. While states may, in strictly limited circumstances, derogate from their human rights obligations to respond to a public emergency that threatens the existence of the nation, emergency measures are not a blank cheque to crack down on human rights, silence dissent, or concentrate power.” READ MORE: amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…

Today, the Nobel Peace Prize honored Navi Pillay's extraordinary legacy: the belief that no one is above the law and that victims deserve truth, justice and reparations. Just hours later, the @POTUS administration sanctioned the International Criminal Court itself in an attempt to undermine that very principle. The answer must be resistance, solidarity and a determined defence of international justice. States cannot remain silent. They must act now to protect the @IntlCrimCourt, resist efforts to obstruct its work, and reaffirm that no one is above the law. Read our @amnesty position: amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…

People have the right not to be sent to a country where they would be at real risk of human rights violations, including torture or enforced disappearance. The U.S. must stop third-country deportations. Read more: amnestyusa.org/blog/how-do-u…

🚨🇺🇸 It is time to #AbolishICE Racial profiling. Arbitrary detention. Unlawful killings. Possible enforced disappearances. Abusive detention conditions. Violent repression of peaceful protest. Our new @amnesty @amnestyusa investigation exposes a disturbing pattern of human rights violations by @ICEgov, @CBP and other federal agencies under the Trump administration’s mass detention and deportation system. These are not isolated incidents. They are recurring patterns of abuse enabled by racist and xenophobic policies, militarized enforcement and persistent impunity. ICE cannot be reformed around the edges. It must be abolished. We must end this machinery of fear and cruelty, hold those responsible for violations accountable, and build an immigration system rooted in human rights and dignity. President Trump is at it again. The president wants to stifle scrutiny and evade accountability by punishing journalists and silencing media outlets for their coverage of his administration. Attacking freedom of the press and access to information is just one way this administration continues to crack away at the pillars of a free society. The Trump administration must end its attacks against the free press and free expression. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…

Amidst Israel's ongoing ethnic cleansing campaign in the West Bank, Palestinian human rights defenders like Eid al-Hathaleen refuse to be silenced, fighting peacefully to protect their communities against erasure and uprooting. As we mark two years since the UN General Assembly's Resolution demanding an end to Israel's unlawful occupation of Palestinian territory, join Eid and his community to demand an end to Israel's system of apartheid, occupation and state-backed settler violence.

IRAN: On the 4th anniversary of the Woman Life Freedom uprising, @amnesty’s new report details how Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity to crush dissent, and exposes command structures, identifying 87 officials for criminal investigations. Those responsible for crimes against humanity in 2022 still control the deadly state machinery of repression. The int’l community must end the normalization of mass protest killings in Iran and pursue international criminal justice. We call on the UN General Assembly to create an international criminal justice mechanism aimed at prosecuting those most responsible for crimes against humanity in Iran. The UNGA must urgently advance pathways to international justice and confront the unconscionable impunity that enables recurring and escalating mass protest killings in Iran. amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…

Four years after Woman Life Freedom, one lesson could not be clearer: impunity kills. Our landmark new @Amnesty investigation finds that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity to crush the 2022 uprising. We identify 87 officials who should face criminal investigation and expose the architecture of repression and impunity that enabled murder, torture, enforced disappearance, rape, imprisonment and persecution. That architecture did not disappear when the streets emptied. The cycle of repression has continued and escalated, culminating in the 8-9 January 2026 massacres, when thousands of protesters were killed in just 48 hours. Today, people in Iran are caught between two profound threats: repression by their own authorities and the devastating consequences of unlawful military action by the USA and Israel. The Iranian authorities have also used wartime conditions to intensify repression internally. The international community must act: the UN General Assembly should urgently establish an international criminal justice mechanism for Iran, alongside efforts to secure an enduring ceasefire and accountability for violations committed in the current conflict. After four years, remembrance is not enough. Justice is how we break the cycle. amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…
