When it comes to tackling climate change, we believe we cannot manage what we cannot measure. This is where environmental accounting and reporting comes in. We had @AmyLuers, @Microsoft's Global Director of Sustainability Science, break it all down for us. 🧵⬇️

The current methods of greenhouse-gas accounting are broken. Thanks to @amyleurs and coauthors we have a new article in @Nature outlining the need for reliable, interoperable systems. This needs to be the foundation of a net zero carbon economy. nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

New @Nature comment led by @amyluers of @Microsoft and @LeehiYona of @StanfordEarth reveals 5 fixes to make carbon accounting more accurate: go.nature.com/3z883RR
4/4 Trees are not permanent, but trees, forests, and nature are necessary for managing the climate crisis. 𝙒𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣'𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙧𝙮

3/4 The climate crisis requires: (1) Cut emissions of GHG emissions to near zero by mid-century & (2) Invest in nature for carbon removal and storage, and climate resilience & (3) Invest in permanent carbon removal tech, to enable scale deployment within a couple of decades.
3
2/4 Protecting and restoring forests can reduce peak warming and build climate resilience. But there is a catch: Temporary storage of carbon in trees only decreases peak warming if fossil fuel emissions to near zero. (lnkd.in/gzV9vmfd)

1/4 @hausfath, in his opinion in @nytimes, correctly argues humanity cannot rely on trees for permanent carbon removal. 𝘐 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦. However, humanity must rely on trees and other natural systems for tackling the climate crisis. nytimes.com/2022/06/04/opini…

Temporary nature-based carbon removal can lower peak warming but only if we also stop burning fossil fuels See our recent paper nature.com/articles/s43247-0… @damon_matthews @amyluers @mitchell_dickau @SabineMathesius @SFUResearch @GeogSFU @SFUENV
