When Bangladesh finally voted in February, the Awami League, the party of 1971, was barred from the ballot. Jamaat-e-Islami, a party that stood with Pakistan in 1971 and was banned by Hasina’s government in August 2024, returned with its best showing in history. Its alliance took 77 seats, more than four times its previous best, and became the main opposition.
