📌📌 What Uganda needs to get out of a currency crisis 1. Create conducive environment for business investments through respect for rule of law and human rights 2. Increase exports 3. Stop gaging the not for profit sector (FFS, jobs, taxes) 4. Fix corruption and money laundering games 5. Fix political tantrums to create political stability and a healthy democracy

Madagascar’s President, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, has reportedly banned ministers and government officials from sending their children abroad for school. He says public leaders should back local schools instead of using taxpayers’ money to pay for overseas education. 🇲🇬 He has also barred serving ministers and government officials from holding dual citizenship or foreign passports.

Reflecting on recentring economic, social and cultural rights (ESCRs) and the right to development in Eastern Africa, at the Reimagining the Future of Human Rights in Africa: Eastern Africa Convening taking place in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. ISER’s ED @anabwowe highlighted the current situation in Uganda with high fuel prices, inflation and depreciation of the shilling, and she linked this to statements by the Secretary to the Treasury that all Uganda’s economic fundamentals are in good place; that Uganda 's economy is growing steadily and that the IMF projects Uganda to be the fastest growing economy in the region in 2027 at 9.9%. She argued that economic development should not be measured by only growth and investments but also by whether people can enjoy their ESCRs; whether communities benefit from their natural resources citing the discovery of oil in Uganda and the vast minerals in DR Congo; whether development protects the environment and preserves human dignity. She also noted that the African Charter which establishes the rights and principles against which states' conduct can be assessed, and Agenda 2063 which provides a shared continental vision for development ask whether the region’s development is not only generating economic growth; but also protecting rights, distributing benefits fairly, safeguarding communities and the environment. On significant gaps facing the region, @anabwowe noted the debt stress that has turned into a human rights crisis as countries are spending more on servicing debt than on health, education and social protection combined. This situation triggered regressive taxes like VAT that impact the poor more, and austerity measures that has led to underfunding of the above social services and paved way for privatization leaving access to ability to pay thus driving inequality. She re-echoed calls for debt transparency and oversight to ensure that sovereign borrowing yields public benefits, progressive taxation and curbing Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) by implementation of the Anti-IFF’s Policy Tracker to halt billions of dollars lost annually to corporate evasion. @OpenSociety @achpr_cadhp @FeministsKE

Our ED @anabwowe will be speaking on a panel about recentring economic, social and cultural rights, and the right to development in Eastern Africa. The meeting is organised by the @OpenSociety and Co-convened with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (@achpr_cadhp), the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Feminists in Kenya. @UNHumanRights @FeministsKE

Last week, Kenya announced an increase in PAYE exception from 30,000 Kshs to 32,333 Kshs. At the current forex rate of 33, that means people earning the equivalent of 1,066,989 UGX in Kenya will NOT 'PAYE'. In Uganda, PAYE exception stands at 335,000/= - almost THRICE AS MUCH as Kenya!

UGX - second worst performing currency in the world after Iraq’s dinar 😳😳😳 When we say that the Pearl is consistently listed among failed states, some regime propagandists come here to quarrel. Can you quickly gather today? The shilling is mainly suffering from 3 broad issues: 1. Global factors (fuel, wars) 2. Health factors (Ebola affecting tourism) 3. Bad politics (fiscal indiscipline, human rights violations, break down of rule of law, sovereignty act, excesses in NGO regulation, etc) Without fixing the politics, forget about 10 fold growth, blah blah blah
Uganda is tapping its nearly $7 billion in reserves to lessen the blow of a plunging shilling, which is the world’s second-worst-performing currency this month after Iraq’s dinar. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

We wrapped up the CSO Working Group on Social Protection webinar, held as part of Uganda's Social Protection Month 2026, under the theme “From Vulnerability to Resilience: Strengthening Social Protection to Reach Those Left Behind.” The discussion brought forward important reflections on strengthening inclusive social protection in Uganda: 🔹 Ogen Zephaniah of @ESPprogramme emphasised social protection as an important instrument for redistributing resources and reducing inequalities. 🔹 Fred Were stressed that coverage does not necessarily translate into protection, calling for social protection to be anchored in dedicated legislation. He also highlighted how errors in @NIRA_Ug records continue to exclude many older persons from accessing benefits. 🔹 Kezia Mukasa highlighted the disproportionate care responsibilities borne by older women, many of whom support grandchildren and orphans despite limited resources, alongside their growing vulnerability to climate change. 🔹 Lydia Bwiite challenged the disconnect between economic growth and social protection funding, noting that many Ugandans, particularly informal sector workers, remain without adequate safety nets. #SocialProtectionUG #APeoplesPension #SPMonth2026 @ESPprogramme @Mglsd_UG
