Japan has the Three Non-Nuclear Principles: not possessing, not producing, and not permitting the introduction of nuclear weapons. This has been a cherished national policy for Japanese people since the end of the war. In her own book, Sanae Takaichi publicly stated that the “not permitting introduction” principle “interferes with the Japan-U.S. alliance.” When addressing the possibility of reviewing the principles in Hiroshima—the site of the atomic bombing—she limited herself to saying that they are currently being maintained, and did not clearly state whether they would continue to be upheld in the future. This is a truly alarming stance. Local assemblies have been sending successive petitions to the national government calling for the principles to be maintained. However, some local politicians have voted against their adoption to obstruct them, making it clear that politicians holding such dangerous ideas exist not only at the national level but also in local politics. In the February election, how many voters were actually calling for a review of the Three Non-Nuclear Principles? Most people were seeking measures against rising prices and corrections to wages. She gained explosive popularity at the time largely because she is a woman, yet the direction she is actually trying to advance is this dangerous one. Nearly nine months have passed since the election, but the response to issues that directly affect people’s livelihoods has been far from sufficient. Her posture of following the excesses of the United States and clinging to the Japan-U.S. alliance without prioritizing the interests of the Japanese people is deeply absurd. Moreover, it is a fact that many Japanese citizens are still unaware of this important reality. Now is the time to sound the alarm to the world about Japan’s far-rightward shift.
