SAFL grad student @MohammadaliOly1 uses a hyperspectral spectroradiometer to detect the spectral reflectance signatures of plastic. Mohammad & advisor Ardeshir Ebtehaj hope to equip drones with these sensors for quick & inexpensive detection & cleanup of plastic in water bodies.

This is not a faculty or a research position, but it can be a very fun job if you like big experimental facilities, SAFL is a playground for the curious minds
Replying to @saflumn
@saflumn is hiring!! This position is a mix of Facilities Operation and Maintenance, Health and Safety, and of course, Research Support, all in a historic facility on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River with views of downtown Minneapolis. z.umn.edu/SAFLhireFOM

Very strong temperature gradient at the water free surface (not frozen, so about 2-4C) and air, about -20-25C). Add wind and, yes, you have a relatively-hot tub with plenty of heat and moisture fluxes: a natural fog - cloud generator

What is #COP27? I don't want to assume everyone knows so let's take some time to break it down ... COP stands for Conference of the Parties and it is an international meeting of the "parties" or states that are in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

With GSA rapidly approaching, now seems like a good time to announce that I'm recruiting graduate students for the Climate, Lithosphere, and Sedimentary Tectonics research group at University of Oklahoma for fall 2023. We use basins to understand tectonic and climatic processes.

Massive downdraft. The Settling velocity is way larger than that of the single droplet, and the precipitation dynamics is essentially a density current, more like an avalanche than rain

Which small cities in the US are leading in transitioning to zero carbon electricity? And how are they doing it?
I have spent 7 months battling with my city over a 15-year coal power contract they are planning to sign. I want to show them there are better ways forward.

Welcome to the updated Outdoor StreamLab! OSL Manager Jess Kozarek gave a tour of the renovated OSL, with assistance from SAFL engineer Chris Milliren, who showed off the new self-propelling gantry! This allows Jess and others to move the data carriage with much greater ease.

What effect does a 250 million cubic metre landslide have on a glacier?
In our new paper just out in Geology (doi.org/10.1130/G49854.1) we explore the impact of the 2019 Reclus landslide in Patagonia on tidewater glacier Amalia.

Flooding season has arrived! We've taken on about 24" of water in the SAFL basement level - lucky for us, the Lab was built to flood, with one of our record years in the '60s recording 7 feet of water!
