New: NYC voters gave a confident “yes” to all five of the ballot measures put forward by Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s first charter commission, with election night results favoring proposals intended to streamline government processes.

Frustrating how blue cities exert so much energy on performative environmental regulations with ambiguous benefits, while enforcing land-use policies that are clearly destructive to nature.
NYC still mandates parking near plenty of subway stations!

I don’t think abolishing the governing board of the City University of New York will do much to benefit the people of Palestine, personally
Replying to @taliaotg
Expanding:
Abolishing the CUNY Board is a maximalist position, with roots to activist criticism of the CUNY system’s repression of pro-Palestine students. Mayor appoints 5 of 17 positions, governor appoints 8. Mamdani could, in theory, try to leverage with Hochul to remove those seats, or at the very least change who’s in them.
As for stopping the illegal land sale events, Menin & co already pushed through legislation attempting to criminalize protests against them, but no movement has been made criminalizing or otherwise impeding the use of houses of worship for activities in violation of international law. Mamdani has an opening here.

This administration is just so good at identifying the things that make life worse for New Yorkers and that have very little upside, and just being like, ok yeah we're just not doing that anymore.
New Yorkers should know whether the apartment they’re looking at is real.
That’s why we’re working to require apartment listings to clearly disclose when images and videos have been generated by AI.
Finding a home in New York is hard enough without artificially generating more problems.

Ever since I belatedly discovered the existence of Prep for Prep, this whole conversation has come to seem increasingly absurd
Black students made up just 1% of all students admitted to Stuyvesant High School over the last 10 years. The system is broken.
@CMNantashaW and I have a plan for how we can expand equitable, inclusive, and academically excellent specialized schools.

The experience of a scheduled bus not showing up and leaving you stranded and confused is basically enough to turn someone off the entire concept of transit for life
Reliability and frequency needs to come first. The Uber always shows up.
I advocated for free fares years ago. It just made sense to me: instead of elaborate green and equity initiatives, why not just make transit free? Why collect small fares from the working class in a progressive city?
But then I started riding and learned about it more.
1) generous and popular free fares already exist for low income riders
2) riders do not prioritize free fares, sensibly, because time, stress and uncertainty on transit are a far bigger concern than the small fare
3) the goal is to compete with the car. The biggest barrier to transit competing with cars is not cost. It is travel speed and quality.

Mamdani forcing city employees and staffers to actually do their job to the point that they’re crying about it is such a white-pill holy shit

survey after survey after survey after survey shows that transit riders prioritize higher frequency over lower fares, and yet somehow the entire US progressive movement has decided that listening to what the people who actually ride the bus want is irrelevant

Kind of amazing that for all the talk about abundance versus socialism, it’s the socialists like Mamdani in New York and Raman in Los Angeles talking about fast tracking projects and housing.
It’s moving, but where are the people?
This project was supposed to open over three years ago and is almost $1 billion over budget. What went wrong?
The project’s contractor, LINXS, has essentially been extorting the city for years. Now Mayor Bass’ Airport Commissioners are making YOU pay for it by tripling fees on Uber and Lyft rides.

Absolutely incredible case of hit dogs hollering.
The NYC Council is going after a YIMBY Mamdani appointee because in 2014 he wrote a law review article pointing out that cities do exclusionary housing just like suburbs.
New: Mamdani’s pick for a key housing post faces a rocky road to City Council confirmation.
Council members, including some progressives, are uneasy about how the process has played out and concerned about the pick's views on development & homeownership. politico.com/newsletters/new…

You can ban corporate rentals and complain about hedge funds and capitalism all you want, but until we deal with these people and the power they have over local government, we're never fixing our housing crisis
Hundreds of #SanFrancisco Marina residents turned out this evening for townhall on controversial @Safeway housing plan, which would place what for many is an uncomfortably tall, 22 & 18 story project at the low-slung neighborhood’s waterfront.

People in NYC used to say that Trump was "a poor person's idea of a rich person"--which was supposed to be a dunk and actually described his political appeal. Dems trying to tap that same populist energy instead selected a rich person's idea of a poor person.
