Just about 11 years after I started writing it, PLANES is out today!
According to the New York Times it "captures our shared human ache with stunning accuracy." 🫠

one just knows Isaac Chotiner has called Stevens a few times, and that she's genuinely thinking about it
The e-book of my 2022 novel PLANES is currently on steep discount: $7.99 (everywhere, apparently), a bargain for a book that one reader described as “the love-child of Don DeLillo and Virginia Woolf.”

The audiobook, read by Lameece Isaaq — who won multiple awards for her handling of the material — appears to be selling cheap as well. $12.99 via Apple Books, with similar prices elsewhere.

I told my students I would write an example case study about the classical psychoanalytic defense mechanisms, using any fictional character of their collective choice. After a grueling multi-round election, we have a winner:
confidently introducing errors into copy, secretly racking up huge expenses, way overdoing it on the em dashes, taking any assignment offered, buying huge amounts of books from used bookstores for no reason—AI is a mid-career magazine writer

This year’s buzzy “A Violent Masterpiece” inverts the genre’s traditional contrast between optimism and despair. Is a hopeful crime novel still a noir? newyorker.com/books/under-re…
Once on Sanibel Island, Florida, I read a short story by Ben Lerner set on Sanibel Island, Florida, and the next day I almost smashed into a guy with my bike on one of the island's famous bike paths and that guy was Ben Lerner.
You can also work the other end. Like maybe the idea you pitched didn't really work out. But still, at $14/w (my average), if you just file a paragraph or two then you'll still make some prosciutto money.

my one tip for the “how can young writers make more money?” discourse is to note that editors will often pay a bonus if you go long. So like, my Gawker contract was $8/word, but I’d often file 2–3 times as many words as initially agreed upon, and they’d bump me up to $10/word
