📢 SLD support added
You can now look up whois information and check the availability of SLDs at my Handshake Explorer. It will also show the prices for registration, renewal and transfer at various registrars.

ENS Update 🧵: In 2023 Unstoppable Domains (UD) obtained a patent for technology ENS Labs developed as open-source. Today, we petitioned USPTO to challenge the validity of that patent, and to ensure the web remains a collaborative space. Here's why and what’s at stake.

Good reminder of incompatible values between Web2 and Web3.
Samourai's ICANN domain has been ceased which wouldn't have been possible with a Handshake domain. Who remembers BTC-E?
Web3 needs a separate root zone with censorship resistance as a core value. Web3 projects that seek to "play nice" with ICANN miss the point.

Yet another reason why you should avoid #UnstoppableDomains like the plague. Imagine paying almost twice as much at UD as you would at other registrars, only to be told that your domain is trapped and therefore can't be sold.

Seriously though, @mattgould @findporpoise have you guys let your VCs know how much money you have wasted on trying to stop .wallet/ on Handshake Protocol. We tagged them just incase.

amazing breakdown of why @HNS Handshake is the best decentralized naming layer, by none other than @JupiterExchange founder @weremeow (and @apdotg @cassshih)

1) In the recent @DomainSherpa eposide on YouTube (youtu.be/ifkpXoGNo1s?si=Plus…, from 27:00), I've heard a few statements from @andrewrosener about #HNS and Web3 domains that need correction. ⬇️
5) With reference to Metamask: "Depending on the network I select in my wallet, I might be sending it to Jonathan.eth on the Ethereum blockchain under the ENS domain protocol or I may be sending it to Jonathan.eth on the Handshake protocol."
As previously stated, there is no collision between Handshake and ENS with .eth. Metamask does not support Handshake. Even on Ethereum, anyone could launch an alternative naming service with the same TLD. However, there will be no confusion because this naming service will be largely unknown, the smart contract is not integrated anywhere and .eth is overwhelmingly associated with ENS. For example, when you hear about Washington in the news, you'll probably associate it with Washington, D.C. and not Washington, Illinois with a population of 16k.
Even if a TLD is not yet significantly associated with a naming service and is distributed by several naming services, confusion can simply be prevented by specifying which naming service/protocol is meant until one of the naming services prevails. Springfield exists over 60 times in the USA, yet postal delivery is still possible since every place has a unique zip code.
6) I'd also be curious to hear why @andrewrosener believes that in the future traditional TLDs and registries should and will be on a blockchain, but this blockchain should be Bitcoin when Handshake is essentially Bitcoin and exists for this particular use case?
