Designing evals for contract review is one of the most complex technical problems I’ve encountered. Ten great lawyers will redline the same contract ten different ways. How do you tell an agent what good looks like? We've cracked some big parts of the puzzle and are finally ready to share.

Did you know tiny models are capable of out-planning a database? I trained a 4B model to produce 81% faster query plans than Postgres. Write-up below 👇

our brain is the highest-bandwidth representation of our experience. so naturally, r/w to the brain unlocks a new modality for expression, and, more importantly, can give us insight on how to improve the human condition. i saw this first hand at science. very exciting problems!
Our entire experience of reality is mediated by electrical activity in the brain. I’m inspired by BCI becoming increasingly, backable engineering, pulled forward by AI: models we interact with, translation architectures, and predictors of how perturbations reshape experience.

“The hard part is deciding what good means.” @crosbylegal every eng needs to be able to redline a commercial contract. getting good at the task is the most reliable way to answer the above and build useful evals.
Most evals are bullsh*t. A few companies have asked me for help with evals. The pattern is consistent: teams grade whether an agent sounds good, not whether it does the job. I wrote up what I’ve learned. If your team needs help, I’d love to chat.

We don’t talk much publicly about what we’re building internally. Our main goal is for lawyers to review an agent’s work, rather than redline themselves. The better the agent is, the less time a lawyer spends reviewing its work. Last quarter we finally hit a longtime goal: “the 5 minute NDA review.” We’re the first company to reliably achieve this. Here's how we solved a category of difficult NDAs. Sharing a slide from our last board deck:
Crosby (@crosbylegal) is a “neo-firm," equal parts lawyers and engineers that owns liability, and takes on legal work end to end, handling contracts for @ramp, @clay, @cursor, @cognition, @ListenLabs and more. I spent two weeks embedded in Crosby in New York - seeing their time trials (internal contests where lawyers race to redline a contract), All Hands, eng meetings, hung out in their Slack. I even shadowed lawyers. Over 25 conversations later, I'm excited to share this field study going deep on solving unverifiable problems in law, profile on @ryanjdaniels (Stanford-trained attorney) & @jsarihan (early employee at Ramp), and how "misfit lawyers" feel about the role of the lawyer changing. There’s something very special about the way people’s paths diverge and then cross again. Nicole and I knew each other in college, long before Ramp or Crosby. Years later, she spent two weeks embedded with our team and wrote this thoughtful, deeply observed piece about what we’re building. A little surreal, and very meaningful, for her to write such an incredible piece that snapshots this chapter at Crosby so well.

It is hard to put words around what this piece means to me. I was floored by Nicole's writing when I first encountered it. The depth and texture. It was my dream to have her write about us one day... and we finally convinced her. Dreams come true :)

📣 Update: we raised our $60m Series B from @Lux_Capital, @IndexVentures and @01Advisors, with participation from @sequoia, @eladgil and @BainCapVC . When we came out of stealth 283 days ago, we had negotiated contracts worth $30m for our clients. As of last month, that number is over $1 billion. We work with the most ambitious companies in the world, including @tryramp, @clay and @RogoAI. Today, we want you to hear from some of them directly. Contracts are the rails of commerce. @crosbylegal is a hybrid AI law firm that gets them signed 80% faster. We’re announcing our Series B to keep scaling the dream law firm.

We’ve raised a $20M Series A from @IndexVentures, @BainCapVC, and @eladgil, with participation from @sequoia, @CooleyLLP, and @patrickc It took us 173 days to review our first 1,000 contracts. Now, we do this every three weeks. Even as we’ve scaled, we’ve kept our signature speed. We send back over 90% of redlines in just a few hours. Each month, 30% more GTM teams choose to partner with Crosby to close deals faster, and we’re grateful to support several of the fastest-growing companies in history like @cursor_ai, @Polymarket, and @baseten Our mission is to fully automate human-to-human negotiation. If you’re excited about building the platform to simulate and solve every complex agreement, we’d love to hear from you.

Today we’re introducing Crosby, a hybrid AI law firm that helps rapidly growing businesses execute faster.  Contracts are connection points. They allow companies to transact with one another and create economic growth. But while every aspect of business has sped up, the way we negotiate contracts hasn’t changed in 50 years.  Crosby is building the API for human agreement. We combine the speed and intelligence of AI with the safety of lawyers-in-the-loop to review contracts in under an hour. Since quietly launching in January, we’ve reviewed over 1,000 MSAs, DPAs and NDAs for some of the fastest growing companies in history, including Cursor, Clay and UnifyGTM. Speed to execution is our north star, and today our median review time is 58 minutes. GTM teams call Crosby a secret weapon to close deals 80% faster. We’re just getting started.  Today, we’re also excited to share that we’ve raised $5.8m from Sequoia Capital and Bain Capital Ventures, as well as the founders of Ramp, Instacart, Flatiron Health, and others. Crosby is a small, talent-dense team, combining lawyers from Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia Law with engineers from Ramp, Vanta, Meta, and Google. Every engineer on our team today is a former founder. We work in person in New York City.  If our mission resonates with you, we are looking for technologists, legal experts, and former founders to join us.  For high-growth companies looking to execute faster, we’ve opened up Early Access. Sign up on our website and we’ll be in touch.

🚨New paper led by @aribak02 Lots of prior research has assumed that LLMs have stable preferences, align with coherent principles, or can be steered to represent specific worldviews. No ❌, no ❌, and definitely no ❌. We need to be careful not to anthropomorphize LLMs too much.

🚨 New @iclr_conf blog post: Pitfalls of Evidence-Based AI Policy Everyone agrees: evidence is key for policymaking. But that doesn't mean we should postpone AI regulation. Instead of "Evidence-Based AI Policy," we need "Evidence-Seeking AI Policy." arxiv.org/abs/2502.09618v1
