Q: Were you ever a socialist?
Abdul El-Sayed: No. I'm too much of a scientist to actually believe in any sort of ideology.
I just don't do ideology. I'm a person of faith, and everyone else brings evidence.
The idea that you should have guaranteed healthcare in the country, anybody who tells you that's anti-capitalist is not really understanding how capitalism works.

NO CRYING IN THE CASINO
Germany's Chancellor Merz on Iran War:
We now have costs exceeding €100 billion for Europe alone over the last eight months, solely because of the increase in energy prices caused by this conflict.
More than €100 billion extra has been paid by businesses and consumers in Europe because energy has become more expensive as a result of this conflict.
We have an economic interest in bringing this conflict to an end as quickly as possible.

“Yeah I work at a bank called Evercore. They call it the Goldman Sachs of Midtown. It is an elite boutique where the average pay is now $1.2M per banker. Do I make $1.2M per year? No, but I was ranked top bucket in my analyst class last year so I’ll make that in no time. Anyways, what are you doing later tonight? I can ask my VP if he will let me out a little earlier”

in new york, there's these super hot rich kids that make the cool kids from high school look short and broke in comparison. they're the product of generations of hot people fucking their way into money
when you first move here, you're intimidated by them. but if you get the chance to get them talking, really get them talking, and are able to listen without being distracted by their hotness and impeccable dress, you realize that they're as insipid as cafeteria mashed potatoes
if you've ever been to charleston, you know what i'm talking about. there's all this real money, but no real jobs. you ask a 30 year old w a range rover what he does, and he'll tell you that he trades equities. yeah, so the new york hedge fund set can barely beat the market but this dilettante of finance w a B minus average from the College of Charleston is picking stocks. he'll be okay, though: they don't let him touch the principal
he and his wife share a love of boats, booze and benzodiazepines. the anxiety of a life unlived. they're fucking housecats. meanwhile, the slums around the city make it look like they won the civil war
all of it makes you look at raising the estate tax and why not? belly aching about taxing double and death? liberal gov policies incentivize ppl to move to the sunbelt or offshore. but the fed estate tax can't incentivize them not to die

Huge paradigm shift incoming
Breaking: Weil Gotshal & Manges plans to wind down its operations, its leaders told partners on Wednesday, according to a source briefed on the decision. news.bloomberglaw.com/busine…
one mans rainmaker is another man’s dinosaur
"Weil Gotshal is nothing without its people"
crazy that one of the most prestigious law firms ($2.1B revenue, $5.6M profit per equity partner), is considering bankruptcy.
In law, you can effectively acquire a firm's business without acquiring the firm, and Cravath just took their biggest M&A lawyer which led to a bunch of other people leaving.
In most acquisitions, you buy the company to get its assets. In Big Law, you can just hire the assets and leave the liabilities behind.
IMO AI will make this even worse... If AI replaces much of the work done by junior associates, superstar partners will need fewer people and less infrastructure around them... so why would the best partners share economics with a giant partnership?
oh man
BREAKING: The UK has just issued security alerts for Israel, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, UAE, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Syria, Yemen and Palestine, warning all British nationals of sudden incoming escalation causing severe flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions.
"The context in the Middle East remains deeply unpredictable and the risk of sudden escalation is high," the new warning says.
It now covers British nationals planning to transit the region rather than only those already there, and drops all qualifiers on airspace closures and travel disruptions, which are no longer described as potential.
US embassies across the region ordered departures last week.
