The Canadian government nearly balanced its budget in August, with tax revenue eclipsing government spending. Furthermore, the budget deficit after the first five months of the current fiscal year is roughly half the comparable year-ago level. morningstar.com/news/dow-jon…

Real gross domestic product (GDP) was essentially unchanged in August. Of the 20 industrial sectors, 9 expanded. This was the second consecutive month where real GDP was essentially unchanged.

Trade deficit didn’t change. But at least prices are down, right? (Spoiler; tariffs pushed up prices)

FACT CHECK: Claim: “We now have under construction 97 new car plants. For 48 years we had none”. Actual: 1 plant - by EV startup Slate. In 1978 the US had 55 plants & made 12.8M cars. In 2025 it also had 55 plants & made 10.3M cars. 153 plants would make ~30M cars. For who?
Trump on Canada: "They act like they're totally innocent. They're not. They were very bad. But now they're being taught a little lesson. In fact, we just named a certain lake Lake America. Lake Ontario is now named nake -- and it actually passed"

Advance information indicates that real GDP increased 0.2% in August. Increases in mining and quarrying and retail trade were partially offset by decreases in oil and gas extraction.

This is such a telling anecdote Remarkable how much has changed in such a short period of time
Canada’s approach to its natural resources is changing — and one of the country’s biggest miners says the difference is dramatic. For 10 years, Ammar Al-Joundi says Agnico Eagle couldn’t get anyone from the federal government to attend a mine opening. Then he got a text on a Sunday morning. The Agnico Eagle President & CEO says newly appointed Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson personally reached out, introduced himself and asked one simple question: “How can I help?” For a company investing billions in Canada and employing thousands of Canadians, Al-Joundi calls the shift a “sea change” in how Ottawa approaches resource development. Is Canada finally getting serious about unlocking its natural resources? For all the investors circling Canadian O&G stocks: Alberta now saying publicly that a new royalty framework to incentivize greenfield production will be announced in the coming weeks to help us double production. 📈 (For all the naysayers: this is what we did for the last oil sands buildout and it worked like a charm and led to the province’s enormous royalty post-payouts today)
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has hinted the province will announce a new royalty framework this fall to help ensure a West Coast pipeline happens, despite environmental laws already being rolled back. Why isn't that enough? Smith says royalties "have worked in the past" and a way to ensure the "best investment climate."
