A Chinese state-linked company supplied and managed key equipment linking Greenland's undersea cables to North America and Europe. "The subsea cable threat from China is not a hypothetical concern for the future; it is a present and escalating danger," @augama explained in a March @USCC_GOV hearing. "Allowing China to dominate subsea cable construction and ownership in emerging markets would increase the risk that Beijing could conduct surveillance, intercept data, or deliberately disrupt networks." "Taiwan has lived with the Chinese pressure for decades. But the anxiety today is different because the pressure is no longer only military. It's cyber. It's economic, legal, maritime, disinformation, and diplomatic." @augama on @BBCRadio4

American AI has roughly an eight-month lead over Chinese models. The US should harden how frontier models are built and tested rather than slow capability itself in hopes that Beijing will reciprocate. When Trump and Xi discuss AI this week, the president should make clear that the US will pace the risk, not the race. @augama's latest in @TheNatlInterest: nationalinterest.org/blog/te…

When Trump and Xi meet in DC this week, expect more reassurance, talk of stability, and an emphasis on mutual respect. Trump wants the situation with Taiwan to "stay the way it is." But this assumes China's posture in the Taiwan Strait hasn't changed much. Beijing is on the march. The goal shouldn't be to freeze the status quo, but to change the adversary's calculus on when and whether to move. The only outcome of the summit that matters is whether Xi leaves Washington thinking his timeline for Taiwan has been delayed, @augama argues. Read my latest piece on @WSJopinion on Trump-Xi meeting where I argue “staying the way it is” for Taiwan is a trap.
A quiet Summit should alarm Taiwan. Trump is mistaken if he thinks the status quo in the Taiwan Strait can hold with Beijing on the march, writes Jason Hsu on.wsj.com/4ycM6Pa

China sees the first island chain as an integrated theater. Beijing is applying simultaneous coercion to intimidate allies without engaging in direct combat, @augama explains.

For those gorging on free or cheaper Chinese AI models, be careful. Don’t you understand that Chinese companies will raise their prices or restrict their models? Don’t you understand that it will be very complicated and expensive to replace your Chinese AI model when this happens? Don’t you think this is by design? Don’t you understand Beijing did took similar steps with solar panels, telecom and equipment, and critical minerals? Great op-ed by @augama

This does not threaten OpenAI or Anthropic. Their business is the frontier: the hardest, highest-value work, sold to customers who will pay for the best. The only question is whose model sits underneath. It should be an #American one

Fund a contract to train an advanced open-weight model, with the weights permanently open. Finance the #full-stack abroad with #trusted allies — chips, storage, compute — not the model alone.

The United States has never dominated in technology by locking its platforms away. It dominated by making its platforms the ones the world’s developers chose to build on. So the answer is to #outbuild, not to block:
