This is what we are fighting against. 12 newborn pups in danger of being culled. A complainant wants these poor babies gone asap and is not even waiting for the mom to come back. She's probably somewhere on the streets struggling to find something to eat. We and @alisumair725 are trying to find a solution. This is the reality of our work which sadly is harsh and grim and not easy 😢

“Keep reading books, but remember that a book's only a book, and you should learn to think for youself.”
- Maxim Gorky
Maxim Gorky, born Alexei Peshkov in 1868, adopted the name “Gorky,” meaning “bitter,” a fitting reflection of the harsh realities that shaped his life and writing. Orphaned at a young age, he worked numerous difficult jobs, including as a dishwasher, baker, and dockworker, experiencing poverty firsthand. Those years heavily influenced his stories about laborers, wanderers, and society’s outsiders who struggled against hardship. Works such as The Lower Depths and Mother established him as an important literary voice for Russia’s working class and closely associated him with the development of socialist realism.
Beyond his social themes, Gorky emphasized the importance of independent thought. Reading could introduce people to new perspectives, but he believed books should serve as tools for developing the mind rather than replacing personal judgment.
“Keep reading books, but remember that a book’s only a book, and you should learn to think for yourself.”
The message is that reading should strengthen your ability to think, not do your thinking for you. Books expose us to the experiences, arguments, and ideas of others, but readers still have a responsibility to question what they encounter, examine the evidence, and form their own conclusions.
The deeper lesson is that the value of reading does not come from automatically believing everything on the page. It comes from engaging with ideas critically, comparing different perspectives, and ultimately deciding for yourself what deserves to be accepted as true.

“You should not be afraid of someone who has a library and reads many books; you should fear someone who has only one book; and he considers it sacred, but he has never read it.”
- Friedrich Nietzsche
Friedrich Nietzsche was born in Germany in 1844 and experienced the death of his father at a young age. Growing up surrounded by grief and solitude helped shape his deeply questioning nature. Rather than finding comfort in traditional beliefs, Nietzsche constantly challenged accepted ideas and pursued difficult truths. Much of his life and philosophy centered on understanding suffering, purpose, and what it truly means to live fully.
A major turning point came when Nietzsche began distancing himself from the beliefs, thinkers, and institutions he had once respected. He increasingly questioned religion, conventional morality, and social expectations, arguing that people often inherit their values instead of forming them independently. This rebellious approach influenced works such as Thus Spoke Zarathustra and helped establish him as one of philosophy’s most influential figures.
Nietzsche’s own experiences also reinforced his belief that hardship can contribute to personal growth. His life included chronic illness, loneliness, troubled relationships, and periods of isolation. Rather than viewing suffering only as something to escape, his philosophy often explored how confronting adversity could build resilience and transform a person. Instead of seeking a life without difficulty, he emphasized developing the strength to endure and overcome it.
The quote about fearing someone devoted to a single sacred book reflects a warning against blind allegiance and unquestioned certainty. A person exposed to many different ideas has more opportunities to compare perspectives, challenge assumptions, and think critically. By contrast, someone who unquestioningly treats one belief or text as absolute—especially without seriously examining it—may become rigid or dogmatic.
The larger message is that knowledge itself is not necessarily dangerous. The greater danger can arise when limited understanding is combined with complete certainty. The passage encourages skepticism, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to examine even the beliefs a person holds most strongly.

Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.
But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.
A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said
We are at our best when we serve others.”
