What happens when child protection systems fail to keep pace with the digital world?
HRCP's groundbreaking new study, one of the first in Pakistan to examine online child sexual exploitation and abuse (OCSEA) through both child rights and digital rights lenses, reveals how children are falling through the cracks of fragmented laws and institutions.
Using the 2025 Muzaffargarh case, in which an international network allegedly groomed and exploited at least 50 children as young as six, the report shows that OCSEA is not simply a cybercrime or content moderation issue—it is a profound violation of children's rights. It argues that Pakistan's greatest challenge is not a lack of laws, but the absence of a coordinated, child-centred protection system.
Researched by journalist @FatimaRazzaq20, HRCP's Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim Fellow for 2025, the report calls for integrated legal and institutional reforms, stronger platform accountability, improved data systems, and victim-centred support that places children's dignity, safety and recovery at the heart of the response.

A Swedish friend, Tetra Pak MD in Pakistan, departed from the country on short notice.
I asked why? His guard had stepped away for prayers and left his rifle 🔫 in the open. The MD's ten-year-old son found it. That was the moment he decided #Pakistan was not a safe place.
We've normalised brandishing guns. Rifles on every gate, containers across every road — to us, that reads as security. To the rest of the world, it is the opposite: an insecure country on the brink of an attack.
I've watched long marches of Benazir (90s) Nawaz (00s), Imran (10s), and never seen this many container walls. Shutting down a city to manage a protest projects the opposite of control and clam.
Every visible gun, every sealed road, is an act of self-sabotage against #FDI we want.
#Investors read our security theatre as a warning, rather as safety.
To us, guns mean "you are protected”, but to investors they scream "be afraid."

Well, the dreaded day is here.
Discord is now surveilling users and automatically sorting every account into one of three buckets: adult, teen, or “unconfirmed.”
And if it gets your age wrong you may have to prove you’re an adult with an ID + selfie, credit card, or another age check.
Discord says 90%+ of users won’t have to verify. Sounds somewhat reassuring, until you remember it has 200M+ monthly users.
That still leaves potentially 20M+ people being asked to show their ID just to use Discord.
