The Iran war has exposed the limits of military power and the broader demands of strategy, Hoover Senior Fellow @BarryStrauss argues in a new episode of Policy Stories.
As he explains, the conflict shows why deterrence depends not only on force but on economic pressure, alliances, strategic flexibility, and sustained public support as well.
This short video amplifies the arguments Strauss made in his recent essay for Strategika, "Lessons of the Iran War."

I wasn’t in my hometown of NYC on 9-11. I was out rowing on the Cayuga Inlet upstate on an uncommonly pretty September morning. When I got home a friend called from Manhattan and told me to turn on the tv. A month later I went to the City for a lunch meeting. As our bus 1/4
suddenly smoke appeared inside the room. What followed was looks of panic on the other diners’ faces such as I had never seen. I thought everyone was going to jump up and run outside. Then a waiter came from the kitchen to explain that it was only a minor stovetop fire and 3/4
"JEWS VS. ROME tells a story whose broad outlines I knew well....but with an aspect I had never fully appreciated: how much of the story was not simply Romans fighting Jews, but Jews fighting Jews." bit.ly/4xUlQZx

Tonight is the 250th anniversary of when, under the providential cover of a deep fog, George Washington was able to evacuate the #USA🇺🇲’s entire Continental Army to Manhattan without the loss of a single life after losing the Battle of Long Island.
For an account of this strategic retreat and its historical significance, see @Cornell professor emeritus & @HooverInst senior fellow @barrystrauss’s article in @CityJournal.
“American independence could certainly have been lost without the escape from Brooklyn in August 1776... Today, the feat is often forgotten or overshadowed by more traditionally triumphant moments from the Revolutionary War. But as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence, we should remember that before George Washington could lead America to victory at Yorktown, he had first to save it from defeat in New York.”

On this night 250 years ago, Washington evacuated some 9,000 men from Brooklyn under wind and fog, then stepped into the last boat himself. The Continental Army survived, and so did American independence, writes Senior Fellow @BarryStrauss in @CityJournal: city-journal.org/article/geo…

In this Q&A section, Senior Fellow @BarryStrauss addresses the forces shaping Israel's future, from political divisions within the country to changing international support and the resilience of the US-Israel alliance. Strauss considers the Palestinian identity and displacement, the treatment of refugees across the region, and the rise of antisemitism on American college campuses. [Part 2/2]

Israel's historical foundations, status as a democracy, and right to exist remain central to debates over Zionism and antisemitism. At his talk at Hoover Institution Summer Policy Boot Camp, Senior Fellow @BarryStrauss explored the depth of the Jewish connection to the land, the distinction between criticism of Israeli policy and opposition to Israel's existence, and why the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains so difficult to resolve.
