What everybody is completely missing here is that this isn't a <insert your favorite language> vs Rust argument here. It's a call to consider yourself a software engineer and no longer a <insert your favorite language> engineer.
Last conversion of the Campfire from my token stash goes to JavaScript/Express. As with the others, I'm sure you can find more to optimize. But this gives you a sense of what order of magnitude these options exist within with agent-led development. github.com/basecamp/once-cam…
The BEAM's runtime operates within a containerized VM. It is never going to catch up to systems level language for perf. This is even harder to do when you take into account things like hot code loading. That feature isn't going to get dropped just for operational speed.
You don't always need that speed though. Then again you don't always need the guardrails of the BEAM either.
@dhh's point here is that within like a day or two he had his app re-written to go 50x faster for what, $20? People are getting so hung up on defending their turf they have completely missed the bigger picture.
There are escape hatches though, in most cases a NIF to Rust, C, Go, or Zig is going to get you like 95% of the way there. However, you're then accepting the risk of a fault within that langauge that could take down your entire BEAM instance. In rare edge cases if you have a lot of traffic between the NIF and BEAM then it will absolutely impose a significant overhead as the BEAM marshalls then de-marshalls data going back the forth.
Projects like Nx can certainly close the math gap but aren't ideaol for scale for some deploy environments.

The data center backlash is about much more than data centers and even AI itself.
Most people are just sick of being told that the future is something that happens to them.
