The AP just called Utah's 1st Congressional District for Rep. Blake Moore. The Deseret News @cami_mondeaux broke the news he is running for reelection as vice chairman of the U.S. House Republican conference. But his winning margin was 30 percentage points less than expected. With nearly 90% of votes counted, Moore leads his Democratic opponent, Peter Crosby, by less than eight percentage points. He is on track to end up with just over 50% of the vote. He won his general election contests with 69.5% of the vote in 2020, 67% in 2022 and 63% in 2024. This was a slightly different district under a previous congressional map. But whereas his old 1st District had an average partisan lean of 28 percentage points, his new 2nd District was expected to favor Republicans by 38 points, according to the Inside Elections Baseline. And yet, Moore could end up winning by a margin of just eight points. The biggest swing seems to be in Moore’s native Weber County. In the previous midterm election, Moore had dominated the county by a 37.4-point margin. As of Thursday morning, Moore led Crosby in Weber County by less than 2 points.

Republicans are blaming the Iran war and rising prices for this week's electoral shellacking. Fair enough. But the economic damage didn't begin with the war. It began with indiscriminate tariffs that amounted to a tax increase on American consumers.

I have been holding my tongue about something that happened during the Ohio gubernatorial race. I refused to speak while the election was underway because I did not want my words mistaken for an attempt to influence anyone’s vote. But now that the election is over, I have something to say. For nearly twenty years, my ministry has taken me among the homeless, the abused, the exploited, and the forgotten. I have sat with victims of sexual violence and witnessed the lifelong wounds of childhood trauma. What Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign did to Amy Acton was among the most morally repulsive things I have witnessed in American politics. They took a woman whose stepfather was indicted for raping her when she was twelve years old and featured her mother, from whom she had been estranged for nearly fifty years, in a political advertisement attacking her credibility. The advertisement challenged Acton’s account of her childhood without mentioning the sexual abuse allegations or the circumstances of that estrangement. When people expressed their horror, the campaign defended it. Imagine examining another person’s childhood suffering and fractured family relationships, then deciding those wounds might help win an election. Anyone who has worked with survivors of childhood sexual abuse understands the painful realities of denial, betrayal, shame, and estrangement. A child growing into a successful adult does not erase what happened. Nor does a parent’s denial make that suffering disappear. I find it equally disturbing that an elderly mother, whom Acton herself described as unwell, was brought into this spectacle. Whatever her own struggles or responsibility for the past, exploiting that fractured relationship was grotesque. To everyone who defended this, consider the message you sent to survivors. To the young woman whose family refuses to believe her. To the man who has carried the shame of childhood abuse for forty years. To the frightened child who has yet to tell anyone. What did you teach them about the value of their suffering? I am a priest. I believe in repentance, forgiveness, and redemption. But none of those things requires me to pretend that deliberate cruelty is anything less than a grave moral failure. Your political allegiance does not absolve you of moral responsibility. You do not get to set aside your conscience during an election and retrieve it afterward. If your loyalty requires you to defend the exploitation of a childhood sexual abuse survivor, your loyalty has become an idol. And if your conscience cannot recognize the wrong here, examine what political tribalism has done to it. This is not about Republicans or Democrats. We have a choice as a people: continue excusing cruelty from our preferred political camp, or summon the courage to condemn it wherever it appears. Amy Acton deserved better. Every survivor who watched this unfold deserved better. And God help us if we have reached the point where winning an election matters more than protecting the dignity of a wounded human being.

I'm confused, outraged, and upset by the lack of the world's reaction to the criminal Russian double-tap in Komyshuvakha. Search and rescue operations have been underway for 3 days now following a Russian strike on a school. Russians launched 9 guided aerial bombs, initially targeting residents gathered to receive humanitarian aid, and then striking the first responders and police officers who arrived at the scene. People were there to receive bread! The death toll is currently at 40 people, with over 30 still missing, and after three days, considering the explosions were so strong that recovered bodies are actually "fragments," that means that they are likely gone too. I can't understand why this is not news, why the f*** is this normalized???

Russians have released drone footage of them dropping a multi-ton guided bomb on a school in Zaporizhzhia, setting it to pop music. This strike killed over 30 people. This is Russian culture.

Bad policy, bad character make bad politics: erratic tariffs, impulsive Iran war, blanket pardons, apparent corruption, weaponized justice, ICE brutality, mountainous deficits, hiding Epstein, abandoning allies and coddling enemies. Hoping for a course correction, for the country and for my party.

Independent voters powered President Trump’s comeback victory in 2024. Last night, they voted to hold him accountable after two years of disappointment.

The GOP needs to return to leaders like Nikki Haley.
This is not the time to whine, complain, or point fingers. We need to take our medicine, focus on what the American people want, and get back to work.

Americans don’t like chaos, narcissism, tariffs, corruption, Putin, rudeness to our allies, arrogance & indecency. The GOP should embrace our roots: free markets, economic freedom, peace through strength, federalism, law and order, low taxes, pro-life… and we should act like leaders of the free world.

I've been impressed with @jamestalarico as a politician and person since I first heard him speak more than a year ago. If Democrats can align with his model of governance coupled with responsible policy, and if the @GOP can learn the same, our future is brighter.
.@JamesTalarico: We didn’t win by alienating our neighbors, or by shaming our neighbors, or by ridiculing our neighbors. We embodied a new kind of politics. A politics rooted in a deep love — for our state, for our country, and for all of our neighbors. My faith teaches me that love is the strongest force in the universe. Love is not passive. Love is not neutral. Love is not weak. Love requires that we stand between the bullies and the bullied. Love requires that we look evil in the eye and not blink. Love can heal what’s broken in America.

I’ve heard reporters say that tonight is the most dramatic midterm election in a couple decades. To me, it’s the most significant party turnaround since 1974. From Texas to South Carolina to Ohio, voters saw life in America today and found it difficult and disappointing. Congratulations to tonight’s successful Democrats. You've been given the right to lead, and it's now up to you to prove that you deserve it. #Midterms2026 🗳️

After the Biden era, Americans wanted an economy that worked for them. Instead, they received a hastily executed war, headline after headline of scandals, a ballooning $40 trillion debt, and unpredictable tariffs. It’s time for Republicans to return to the principled conservative values that once defined us—and that we've steadily abandoned over the last decade.

Trump lost this election. Musk and his $474M in contributions weren't enough to change the will and mind of middle class families all across the country. This is democracy! The MAGA and Liberal wings of both parties are not what the majority of American's want.
VoteHub projects James Talarico to win the Texas U.S. Senate election.

As an unaffiliated / independent voter, I'm tired of seeing a @GOP led Congress do little to stand up to the executive office when clear issues arise. Moderates are tired of the extremes on either side, and that's clearly who is speaking loudly during today's midterms. @UtahGOP

Sister missionaries, including my daughter, serving near St Louis enjoyed the Gateway Arch Museum along with the Zoo. Fun prep day for these young people who are sharing the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Incredible that we have 95,000 young missionaries around the world.

Happy Election Day. Get out and vote. Thanks to @DeidreHenderson for making Utah elections safe and easy. And here is to the color green, not red or blue (my sock selection for the day). Vote for candidates who will stand up for you. Integrity, character & dignity matter.

There are options to reduce healthcare spend for groups if employers are willing to think outside the box, and roll up their sleeves.
Important chart from @EconBerger Healthcare costs are soaring again for employers (and frankly for most Americans). Take a look at the green line on the chart. A key reason employers aren't eager to boost wages right now is b/c they are paying a lot more toward healthcare costs. "Wage growth is being outpaced by benefit cost growth. And a major recent driver for benefit cost growth is employer health insurance contributions: they’re growing at 6.4% Y/Y, matching the fastest pace in two decades." - Economist Guy Berger
