This district is the home of the Jack Daniels distillery. Which has not been able to sell its booze in much of Canada for almost two years.
It's over. Scott DesJarlais — in Congress since 2011, in a seat redrawn at Trump +24 and priced at 99.9% Republican — has lost to Democrat Victoria Broderick by 280 votes, 95,585 to 95,305, 100% counted. She raised less than $100,000. The shock of the night in Tennessee.

This is good advice. Ignore the hurry-a-deal brigade. They would have had us gut CUSMA months ago, by agreeing to high tariffs in the name of "certainty". CUSMA is still intact. The President is now less free to do as he wishes with it. Patience and resilience paid off. They will pay off further. We must find the voices in the new Congress (in January), in the states, in the business community who wish to restore sanity, not just deal with Trump misperceptions.
Americans don’t want tariffs. The polls and voters are clear. Do not make a deal with a repudiated and departing president that normalizes tariffs that Americans and Canadians don’t want. Do not put Canada at an economic disadvantage with a tariff-accepting deal.

Careful Trudeau. The Texas economy is larger than Canada’s. And we’re not afraid to use it.

Fox: Why are you here this morning? Trump rally attendee: Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.

This attitude is going to get old, very fast.

I must say that I’m more invested in the success of the incoming Doerkson government than I’ve been in any goverment in nearly a decade. What interests me most is the potential fecundity of the premier-elect’s back-to-basics, normie conservatism. Doerkson isn’t offering political dopamine. His whole pitch is about competent government, economic growth, and public institutions that fulfill their basic purposes. The magnitude of his victory is a sign of how broadly that proposition can appeal. The story, in a nutshell, is a guy from Williams Lake offered a recognizable conservatism that could win in Vancouver-Yaletown. His temperament helped bring together rural communities, suburban families, and urban voters around some straightforward expectations about how their province should work. Schools should teach. The justice system should protect the public. Hospitals should treat patients. The civil service should deliver services competently and impartially. These institutions have important yet bounded missions. They should discharge them effectively and resist the temptation to become vehicles for every passing political or ideological cause. The same practical instinct should guide economic policy: make it possible to build homes, grow businesses, develop resources, and attract investment. Give people reasons to believe that hard work and initiative can produce a better life here. This is the politics of normalcy in practice. And even if its rhetoric is moderate, its ambitions are considerable. Restoring focus and competence to institutions that have lost them will require conviction, persistence, and capable people. That’s another reason for optimism: the quality of the candidates and potential front bench, along with the talented people Doerkson’s leadership drew to the campaign. @gavindew is someone to watch in particular. His interest in both economic growth and making government more productive—including through AI—could make him an important contributor to this governing agenda. The test now is governing. There will be hard choices and inevitable disappointments along the way. But this is a conservatism that I want to see succeed—and an unusually promising opportunity to show what it can accomplish.

Relatively normal and likeable dude replaces deeply unpleasant and polarizing political animal as leader of conservative party and wins massively, in what is surely a fluke one-off with no broader meaning or significance that anyone should pay attention to or ponder in any way.

Is there not a single person in the Administration who can quietly say to him: “Ah, excuse me, Mr. President: - the Canadian trade surplus with us is actually $46 billion, not $90 billion. - their trade surplus with us is only because we buy $110 billion of oil & gas from them, and we’re getting it at a 30% discount! - without the cheap oil we get from Canada, we run a goods & services trade surplus of $66 billion against them. - So actually we’re “ripping off” those dumb Canadians by $66 billion, and getting their oil at bargain basement prices to boot! You should go out there and take credit! We’re winning! It’s proof that your USMCA is in fact “the single greatest trade agreement ever signed,” like you said back in 2018! - maybe we shouldn’t push the Canadians too far, because they sell us 22% of the oil we use, and 2/3rds of the oil we import. - even before Ukraine started that war over there by refusing to become a Russian vassal state, the Canadians were selling us ten times more oil than Russia. - our candidates in the Northern border states are telling us that our tariffs and attacks on Canada are landing like a lead balloon. - how about we move the focus to Communist China instead? For some reason, our voters seem to think that Canada is a friendly ally, but China is an adversary that has been screwing us over on trade for decades.
Reporter: You're going to Michigan tomorrow. Mike Rogers has said the Canada tariff war has to end. Trump: Canada wants very much to make a deal because of tariffs. They want to make a deal. They've been making $90 billion a year for many years with us.

I am grateful to @MarkJCarney for his sympathy for Ukrainians amid the ongoing Russian strikes. The Prime Minister is very well informed about our defense needs, particularly anti-ballistic defense and preparations for winter. It is very good that Canada has become actively involved in developing the FREYJA anti-ballistic system jointly with Europe. This is exactly what can provide greater protection not only to Ukraine but also globally. Of course, we also discussed the energy ceasefire announced by the President of the United States. Ukraine supports this step, and we have stated so, but now we need a response from Russia – what Russia will say to the American President and whether it will stop striking our energy infrastructure. I thank everyone who helps defend Ukraine and advances clear, fair steps toward peace! Thank you to Canada and Mark personally for their full support!

Odd that a story like this should appear only in foreign media. I've been waiting for Canadian MSM to explore how CF veterans feel about the contempt in which they are held by the Trump admin. Good to see someone's done the work. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…
