We heard you Canadians.
When you said you wanted affordable homes, we know what you actually meant was that you wanted your landlord to have more affordable and flexible financing terms.
You're welcome!

Lots of commentary and some incredible looking charts on the low correlation / high rotation regime in which we live. The behavior of the pod shops and long/short equity strategies that are implemented largely market neutral but with a good deal of leverage and run with very tight stop outs is often cited as a factor.
I think you can model out the trading activity in the context of how a dealer would hedge an outperformance option. Suppose a dealer sold an investor an option on the outperformance of asset A over asset B. If the trade is struck ATM, there's no initial hedge. Suppose A rallies relative to B. The dealer needs to buy delta in A and sell in B. That's a correlation dampening impact.
Suppose the option is in the money and the dealer's hedge has left him/her long shares in A versus short B. If A declines, the dealer needs to sell A and buy B. Again, the impact here is to sell one, buy the other, reducing the extent to which they move together.
There aren't actual outperformance options trading in the market of any size, but the pods are essentially manufacturing them through their trading. The tight stop is kind of like option premium being put at risk. If the trade moves against you, you've got to reduce quickly, especially because you have so much leverage on. That reduction is all about the rotation we marvel at.
How does it break? First, the leverage does appear substantial. If the cost of or availability of that financing is disrupted, that can matter, quickly. Second, correlation assumptions. Never, ever trust correlation!
When you backtest strategies that are contingent on the risk offset coming from especially low correlation, they enable your sizing to get larger, sometimes to a substantial degree. LTCM famously had the "on the run / off the run" trade on in USTs in enormous size because the net risk of that position (based on history) was near zero.
If these pod portfolios are really similar on both the long and short side (ie hedge fund hotels), they use lots of leverage, and their "reaction" functions are similar, you could wind up with a large issue if the correlation breaks. If we should learn one lesson from episodes of disruption in markets it is that we underestimate "sameness" and think our portfolios are move diversified than we really are.
Dear service providers,
When you send an email notifying us that "your price is changing" you're not fooling anyone... We all know that means the price is going up.
If it was going down you'd put that in the subject line talking about how great your company is.

Bill C-22 isn’t just about telecom and ISPs. Officials told the Senate this week the definition could scope in gaming platforms and AI services, and Justice counsel confirmed a production order could be made to a daycare. That is surveillance by design.

C-22 was sold as lawful access for telecom and ISPs. At the Senate this week, government officials said its service provider definition is broader than any comparable country they examined, including gaming platforms with chat functions and AI services.

The reason the Canadian Bankers Association arrears data is so much lower than the US and the UK is because the CBA only covers bank loans (which skews prime), and only includes loans that are 90+days in arrears vs the US which includes 30 days or more.

I migrated my corporate books to a custom F# project that creates hledger compatible files from raw banking json files. Eventually I plan on fully automating it with SimpleFinBridge, but already it turned a multi week job into a few days.
I have a Samsung "Smart" TV, and purposefully never connected it to the internet (I use an Apple TV instead).
Samsung spies on what you watch, it spies on what you say, it spies on your other connected devices.

Bill C-22 is a dangerous, unnecessary, expansive law, that weakens encryption, makes Canadians less safe, and risks violating charter protections against unreasonable search and seizure.
How exactly does this make "Canada Strong"?

One of the most important inputs in a financial plan is life expectancy, which is fortunately a guess for most of us.
Why then does most (all?) financial planning software insist on a single number rather than a probability distribution?
The data is available.
