Even as he lay dying on the side of a Southern California mountain – his lips blue, the color gone from his face – wildland firefighter Yaroslav Katkov wanted to push on. “We’re getting to the top. We’re finishing,” he said. A day later, he was dead. laist.com/news/climate-envir…

blue check ai slop about machines taking jobs is levels on levels
SORRY IF THIS OFFENDS SELF-CHECKOUT WORKERS, BUT I'M DONE... I just scanned $140 worth of my own groceries, bagged them myself, and weighed my own produce. Then the machine asked if I wanted to donate $2 to "help end hunger." ABSOLUTELY NOT. You eliminated 4 cashier jobs to boost corporate profit margins, made me do all the manual labor for free, and then asked ME for a tax write-off donation? If you're making customers do the work, give us a 10% employee discount at checkout. THAT'S NOT A COMMUNITY INITIATIVE, THAT'S CORPORATE SUBSIDY.

editors across the country are going to be asking their reporters for “our lesbian bar story” at the all hands this week
Per a note to Boston Globe staff today, the lesbian bar story generated 1,000 subscriptions to the paper yesterday. The Globe’s managing editor said it was “by far our best performing story of the year,” and appears to be “on pace to shatter all sorts of Globe records.”

Some big news from McDonald's this morning. The fast-food giant said it plans to invest $8.5 billion over the next decade, including $5 billion by 2030, to help franchisees modernize restaurants to add more technology and improve the way they function. We got an exclusive look at everything the company plans to reveal today at its Investor Day presentation. The company is about to undertake the biggest training initiative in its history, involving 2 million workers worldwide, on quality improvements and improved hospitality. This is called "Make it Golden," and it is an ongoing process. Marketing changes will leverage more social media influencers and the company's fans, along with data from its 220 million active loyalty members. It will involve fewer LTOs and fewer "borrowed IP." McDonald's wants to sell more chicken and beverages and maintain its lead on beef. It is planning quality upgrades to all of it. And yes, the company is expanding its hand-breaded chicken test. All this will be underpinned by technology, Arch IQ. McDonald's believes the technology and operations improvements will improve efficiency by 250 basis points and cash flow by $100,000 per restaurant. But it's not cheap. And it's complex. Still, the whole effort is designed to make McDonald's a more frequent destination for its customers while its restaurants operate more efficiently. I'll have more a bit later on Restaurant Business, but here is a comprehensive look at everything on NRN: nrn.com/quick-service/inside…

brain-rot videos literally suppress activity in the parts of your brain responsible for cognitive control, the systems that help you resist impulses fascinating if used properly, short-form video seems almost perfectly designed as a cyberweapon: capture attention, weaken cognitive control, then control what millions of people see next and what they will impulsively act on good thing nobody would ever build something like that lol
