I, at least with my OCs, usually create them by combining everything I like into a single character... at least I've done that with some existing/old OCs Ex. Yuki is a mix of what I liked when I was 15: anime girl very kind, two pigtails, long hair, sonic oc, magical girl-ish+

And Spark was made to complement Yuki.. it's what I thought was missing in a Sonic OC.. dark teal, electric color, InuYasha-style personality, very rude and evil.. (later I found out those positions were already taken LOL)
