Looks like selling Royal Mail to a Czech billionaire worked out every bit as well as selling our water system to an Australian investment bank and our steel industry to an Indian multinational

Billionaires who don't pay taxes give tens of millions of pounds to the racist right while newspapers owned by billionaires who don't pay taxes smear the politicians who challenge them. Because they want to ensure 'a fair fight and a level playing field', apparently.

Tennants is holding a kintsugi auction next week to benefit Cancer Research UK.
Kintsugi, as many may know, is the Japanese practice of repairing broken ceramics using urushi lacquer mixed with some kind of metallic dust (often gold). The process is slow, deliberative, and requires skilled hands.
By repairing ceramics this way, the craftsperson highlights — rather than tries to hide — where the item was previously damaged. Many feel that this makes the item look more beautiful. In this way, it's a kind of life lesson: even if things have been broken, they can emerge stronger and more beautiful once repaired, such as relationships or personal trauma.
The auction starts Sept. 7th and runs until the 18th. Proceeds will benefit cancer research.
If you're based in the US and want someone to repair broken ceramics using this technique, I've used Yuko Gunji in New York City and think they do great work.

If Treasury want to find cash to help Hospitality, they should start off by stopping the loopholes that huge corporates like Starbucks and Cafe Nero use.
They syphon off 100's millions of pounds to other jurisdictions, avoiding paying full UK corporation tax.
Your local independent coffee shop probably paid more Corp Tax than them.
Support your local independents.

Lots of the usual right wing accounts on here naively commenting on Iceland's referendum on negotiating to join the EU.
Iceland is already much more closely aligned to the EU than Britain - it is part of the single market and within the Schengen border free zone, meaning the free movement of goods and people. People from Iceland can live and work anywhere they like within the EU and vice versa.
So why have they narrowly rejected negotiating for full membership? In a world - fish. Fishing is a big deal to Iceland (as anyone old enough to remember the cod wars will attest). It contributes around 12% of the country's GDP and 40% of its export earnings.
In case you're wondering fishing contributes about 0.12% of the UK's GDP. EU fishing boats continue to access UK waters post Brexit, because the UK wants to export seafood to the EU (British consumers aren't keen on the most common catches)
So ask those celebrating Iceland's freedom if they'd be happy for the UK to have the same deal...
