What my heart needed today. Healing song for Nuxalk children, by our Haida relatives at our Gvákva'áus Haíłzaqv. Culture is medicine #potlatch
I adopted my grandson Mordecai, in accordance to our Haíłzaqv laws & customs. He is a 2nd gen cutoff as far as the Indian Act is concerned & not entitled to Indian Status. When he was in the womb my father said that is Haíłzaqv blood running through his veins. #belonging 🧡🧡
My new apron is adorned w/ my great great grandfather’s eagle design from a late 19th century bentwood box, made by the talented Yolanda Skelton. I can’t describe how it makes me feel, the connection to self. Wearing next week at a family potlatch will be medicine for the soul.
Love is the foundation of our families. At Gvakva'aus Hailzaqv with both my sons, it’s a memory etched on my heart forever ~ my youngest son waiting for his fiancé to enter the house for their traditional wedding, with his brother at his side.
I’m proud of Max & his family , their determination brought them here today bringing some closure to BMO. The Heiltsuk Nation has enjoyed a positive working relationship with @Vancity for some time. Creating a new memory with a blanket ceremony this afternoon. – at Vancouver, British Columbia
What an amazing day, repatriating sacred pieces of Haitzaqv. I am overwhelmed w/emotion seeing my great great grandfather Captain Carpenter’s chiefs settee. It’s a good day.
