Toni Braxton trusted the people around her with her money. Her albums sold $170 million. She got a $1,972 check, then a bankruptcy. Then the IRS came.
It was 1998. She had hits and a huge tour. Her lawyers said she got less than 35 cents for every album sold. In late 1997, she sued her label to get out of her contract.
In January 1998, she filed for bankruptcy. Her debts were reported at nearly $4 million.
Then the appraisers walked through her house. They counted her baby grand piano, her Gucci silverware, her Porsche, and her Grammys.
In the video below, Oprah asks her if she takes responsibility. She says: “100%.”
Then she explains. She let her finances become everyone else’s finances. She trusted them because they believed in her talent.
Oprah says it back to her: “You trusted them with your money.” Toni answers: “I really did.”
It did not end in 1998. She filed for bankruptcy again in 2010. In 2018, the IRS put a lien on her for more than $340,000. In 2026, her rep said she settled a $598,624 tax debt.
A big income and big money are not the same thing.
The money belongs to whoever reads the contract.
