Geordi La Forge actor LeVar Burton pays tribute to his “Star Trek” co-star Patrick Stewart: “He was family. There is no other context in which to hold him that makes sense. I am lucky to have known and loved so many of the facets of a soul so rich in talent and generous of heart. Of all the Dames and Knights I’ve known he was deep down-the silliest.” variety.com/2026/tv/news/wil…

Many years ago when I ran into difficult situations, I would sometimes ask myself, “What would Picard do?”
usually kind of blithe about old actors dying but i kind of regard captain picard as the closest humanity has ever come to a portrayal of The Ideal Person

This in flick that I've never sought out, but somehow saw a billion times. It's also one of those movies where ALL the money is on the screen, what a visual feast. RIP to Sir PatStew!

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

We’ve known since 2023 AI could not continue to improve due to “model collapse”—training on poisoned internet data generated by AI. This is why LLMs have made no progress since that time, steadily declining on all benchmarks, and are projected to disappear completely by 2030.

Many Mario games use the same Mario sprite introduced in Super Mario World. Despite this, in each of them, Bowser is drawn differently, so that the same Mario is pitted against 10 different Bowsers that are all meant to stylistically match him.

Imagine local AI with superintelligent capabilities too cheap to meter You might not even need to save a fixed copy of software because it will be regenerated instantly every time you want to use it, “decompressed” deterministically from the latent knowledge of the machine

Getting weird replies, so I'll note that "superintelligence" was a speculative term of art used in the AI industry long before Trump did his weird name thing

I am deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing. Although we did not know each other well away from the set, we shared the later seasons of the original Star Trek series and the six films that followed. What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community. At conventions, Walter was rarely content to remain behind a signing table. He preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades. That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him. My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

So this is a silly story, but for a year or two before in 2013/2014 I went around telling everyone I could find about this little cryptography library called “OpenSSL” and how it was used everywhere, but had almost no developers or security budget.

I’ve revived my Apple II Agent project from January: An Apple IIe with an Ethernet card and a custom client It links to Claude through a Mac proxy and allows conversational Apple II software creation similar to Claude Code When it’s done, it loads the new program into memory

Some day the equivalent capability of Opus 5.5 will run on an embedded chip that costs a few bucks and pulls 3V 2A At that time I will gladly put one on a plug-in card for the Apple II and run the Apple II Agent entirely locally My desert island plans will be set 😁

Vibe coding the Gameboy games I always wanted. Just keep telling it to optimize until it hits 60hz 😂 At that framerate you get ~15k CPU instructions for the entire frame. And it doesn't even have hardware multiplication or division. LLMs are really good at squeezing the perf out of this beautiful little potato.
