I'm thrilled and honored to share that, starting in August, I'll be a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University's @StanfordCDDRL! I'll be focusing primarily on foreign pressure and opposition to democratic backsliding. I'm grateful to my committee and others for their support.
Thrilled to be presenting on 11/5 virtually as part of the Israeli Political Behavior Workshop my book project with Hannah Ridge on ascriptive identities and support for democratic erosion. TLDR: what matters is not only who proposes backsliding but the target, as well.

Our paper introducing the US Secretary of State Speech (USSOS) Dataset (1997-2026) is now live on ArXiv! This was a labor of love, so we hope folks in IR/CP/AP/non-political science folks find it useful. All comments/suggestions most welcome.

After three years of work, I am honored to share that my dataset of US Secretary of State speeches (1997-2026) is public! Jay Revolinsky and I introduce a novel corpus of all remarks delivered by US SoS's throughout the post-Cold War (~17,700 speeches).

We're also working now to extend the data back in time thanks to the Hoover Archives. An updated version (~should be out in the next 8 weeks) will feature Warren Christopher's speeches as well, extending the data back to one of the key start dates of US democracy promotion.

๐ขNew paper in @The_JOP on the reciprocal nature of citizensโ support for democratic transgressions.
We show that citizens reciprocate undemocratic behavior: When confronted with violations by political opponents, citizensโ support for transgressions by their own side doubles

How do elections in backsliding settings shape attitudes toward democracy? @ggreilinger and I fielded two surveys: one pre/post & one several months after Hungary's election. Elections appear to increase satisfaction among winners, even months after. WP: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.โฆ
Most alarming: we find, in the immediate aftermath, winners became *more supportive* of anti-democratic principles, but that the effect of elections on such attitudes fades. We think the fact that a mere reminder of the election outcome increases SWD months after is noteworthy.
All comments most welcome! This is part of a larger line of research @ggreilinger and I are pursuing on the challenges associated with democratic restoration. We think this is an especially worthwhile line of work, particularly in light of, e.g.,, Israel's upcoming election. /End
