The rise of the slayer. A night walk after drinks with friends & colleagues resulted in the discovery of the remarkable strategy that allows a small spider to capture abundant but dangerous prey - ants @PNASNews @MPI_CE @mqnatsci @unihh 1/3 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22…

A good use for Framebites is always finding that specific guitar part you are practicing and loop over it to really get it right glaze.app/app/framebites-86G…

Ant-slayer spiders rapidly capture large ants with glue that coats their dragline silk. The spider avoids the ant’s mandibles by dropping below the ant on the same strand of silk. The ant is helplessly suspended in mid air pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22… Now in colour:
Most predators avoid dangerous prey such as ants but on Australian tree trunks, the ant-slayer spider captures ants in split-seconds. @MarieHerberstei @pipilika_aj @LizyLowe @jonas_o_wolff @jimmclean9 and Jutta Schneider, Marcelo Christian 2/3

Not only does the spider capture the ant really fast, but also very successfully. Rapid movements and highly adhesive silk achieve A ~85% success rate. This leaves behind most apex predators. 3/3

Ever wondered why some animals are better at the mimicking game? Get a better idea from the most recent paper from our lab @BehaveEcologyMQ @jimmclean9 #evolution
Mimics are animals (or sometimes plants) that look/smell/behave/... like other animals (or sometimes plants) to get some benefit. It's a very successful evolutionary strategy, but why do so many mimics do a crap job of it? Our review of imperfect mimicry: journals.uchicago.edu/doi/ab…

Moldy arachnids! We found that whip-spiders (Amblypygi) cover themselves in fungi, which grow within a thin layer of secretions on top of their exo-skeleton. This might make them smell like their environment to protect them from predation.

Interested in doing a PhD on how ants can be like Voltron, joining together to form superstructures using only simple, local rules? Check out this fully funded PhD opportunity @Macquarie_Uni in Sydney, Australia (starting soon!); chrisrreid.wordpress.com/phd…
