Thank you for sharing! We’re excited to attend HLTH 2026 and look forward to connecting with fellow innovators, industry leaders, and potential partners!
🌊 Seaweed is more than a marine resource. Its natural materials are opening new possibilities in healthcare, from wound care to advanced biomaterials and sustainable medical products.
A special thank you to @bounceinnovati for supporting BioLabMate and helping make this opportunity possible!

Our Co-Founder, Dr. Sarika Kumari, had the opportunity to present BioLabMate’s work at the Food Forward Summit, highlighting our development of seaweed-derived bioplastics and the role sustainable materials can play in reducing reliance on conventional single-use plastics.
A key part of the discussion was the growing concern around microplastics. As larger plastic products break down, tiny plastic particles can enter marine environments, be ingested by marine organisms, and move through the food chain. This reinforces the need to rethink how short-life plastic products used in food, seafood, and packaging are designed.
At BioLabMate Composite Inc., we are developing biobased materials for more sustainable product and packaging applications, with a focus on practical performance and real-world use.
A sincere thank you to Canada’s @CanadaOSC (Ocean Supercluster) and the @foodforward2026 Food Forward Summit team for creating a platform that brings together innovators, industry leaders, researchers, and ecosystem partners working toward a more sustainable food and ocean economy.

Ten startups pitched delegates and investors Wednesday at BioPort Atlantic's Innovator Showcase, as the Halifax life sciences conference hosted by Life Sciences Nova Scotia marked its 25th year. tinyurl.com/3f9jwwyd
Today, we had the opportunity to meet Dr. Janet Morrison, President and Vice-Chancellor of @MemorialU of Newfoundland, and share the journey of BioLabMate Composite Inc.
We discussed how BioLabMate is working to develop seaweed-derived sustainable materials that can help address plastic waste and support a more circular, low-carbon economy.
We are grateful for the opportunity to share our progress and discuss how university innovation, entrepreneurship, student talent, and the local startup ecosystem can work together to address real-world climate and sustainability challenges.
Thank you, Dr. Morrison, for your time and for the encouraging conversation.

Proud to see BioLabMate representing Newfoundland & Labrador at BioPort Atlantic 2026.
At BioLabMate, we are exploring how seaweed can be transformed into high-value sustainable biomaterials to help address major challenges such as plastic waste, dependence on fossil-based materials, and the need for more sustainable products in life sciences and healthcare.
It is exciting to bring NL-based innovation to a broader Atlantic Canadian stage and work toward solutions with real-world impact.
Looking forward to connecting, learning, and representing Newfoundland & Labrador at BioPort!

Ghost Gear: A Global Marine Threat
Ghost gear abandoned, lost, or intentionally discarded fishing equipment poses a critical danger to marine ecosystems worldwide. Driven by underwater snagging, harsh sea conditions, illegal fishing, and a lack of onshore disposal options, millions of traps and nets are left drifting in the ocean every year. The sheer scale of the crisis spans global waters:
1. South Korea: Over 49,000 tons of traps and gillnets are abandoned annually.
2.Chesapeake Bay (US): An estimated 160,000 blue crab traps were lost each year between 2004 and 2008.
3.Canada: More than 70 km of gillnets were lost in the Greenland Halibut fishery over a five-year period.
4. Baltic Sea: Between 5,500 and 10,000 gillnet fragments were lost annually from 2005 to 2008.
Left unchecked, this continuous accumulation of lost gear traps wildlife and destroys sensitive marine habitats long after fishermen have left.
