In January, Twitter deleted my old account because I deactivated it for too long. Quick update: I passed my AMST prelim exams in June & spent my downtime celebrating my ABD status in Minnesota. 🎉 Back home in Kalihi now for fieldwork.
Here to engage #academictwitter sparingly!
Daghang salamat to my @UMN_AMST department for this recognition. This dissertation chapter draft allowed me to unpack what it means when people say, “Don’t Hang With Those Kalihi Kids.” It’s in this unpacking that, I argue, disrupts popular imaginations of Hawai‘i as “paradise.”
Really appreciate this exploration of the changing political economy in Hawai'i throughout history to critique current theorizations on Asian settler colonialism scholarship.

I love being a PhD student.
it feels like I’m expected to be miserable or overwhelmed.
but as a first-gen student, I’ve had to overcome a lot worse to get here.
to read and write and learn for a living feels like a gift that I hope I never take for granted, inshallah 🙏🏽
